If you are driving, you need one of these.

I have used Cobra, Escort, Bell, and most recently, Cobra again. I was always satisfied, although some brands seemed better than others. However, after getting a Valentine One, and using it to drive from TX to CO last week, I must say, I am sold. Range is great, and the feature of multiple contacts as well as directional indications is very useful. I did not think it would be, but it was.

So, as a fyi, if you are in the market for a detector, spend the exctra couple bucks and go with the Valentine.

(no, I do not work, etc. for valentine....)

....but I do advocate breaking the speeding laws.

Radar detectors are illegal in MANY states! The fines are extremely high.

This isn't the 70s or 80s -- there's no need for excessive speeding to arrive at your destination.

Most cars are equipped with cruise control, use it -- and save some gas and quite possibly someone's life.

I some states (*ahem* MA) driving the speed limit is far more dangerous than going with the flow of traffic. I dare someone to drive down 128 at 55 MPH :scared1:

I'm a grandmotherly type driver under most circumstances, but I do not think having a radar detector means you're a speed demon maniac either....

Pam you know I love ya, but radar detectors are only illegal in a few states. Radar jammers are illegal in all however. It is different for commercial trucks though (more restrictions)

I don't use one anymore, but when I did it actually saved me a ticket when I WAS doing the speed limit. I was on a 4 lane (2 each way) road through a small town in NJ. My radar detector starting going off so I checked my speed and I was right on the posted limit of 35 MPH. The officer was sitting in a parking lot either doing paperwork or reading the newspaper and looking down towards his lap and not at the highway. Just as I passed him a car went by on my left going about 52. So I see the officer flip his lights on and come out of the parking lot onto the highway. I was pretty surprised when he pulled in behind me. I pulled over and he came up and asked if I knew why he was pulling me over. I said no and he replied "You were going 52 in a 35 mile zone. I replied "No I wasn't. I was doing 35 cause when I came up to where you were sitting my radar detector was going off and I made sure I was doing the speed limit. I looked over at you and your were looking down at your lap when I passed you. And since you were looking down you didn't see the green Ford Granada that went flying passed me in the left lane". He just looked at me for a second and said "OK you can go". My wife was in shock. LOL!

They are illegal in Va. and I believe another state, but that is about it. they are not allowed in commercial vehicles. A true jammer is not legal.

I guess it is a matter of perception as to what excessive speed is. I do not believe 85-90 on an open interstate, such as 70 through Kansas, 10 through Texas, or 45 and 35 running north south. Of course, city areas are not "open" interstates.
