Vacation Time = Being a Slob???

Why is this true for some?

When I go on vacation I like to be catered to and pampered and taken care of and I also like to not have to do some of the chores I normally have to do at home. But that doesn't mean I suspend cleaning up after myself to a point (no I'm not going to clear the table after dinner at a restaurant).

Do you notice this though sometimes when you go on vacation? For example (a very small one), in line at a Disney fast food place and I notice the guy in front of me drops his straw on the ground so he goes to get a new one. No problem, I wouldn't want to drink from a straw on the ground either. But would it be to much to have simply picked up the straw he dropped and the wrapper and to have simply thrown it away? Sure I know they have people whose job it is to clean and stuff but why do so many seem to take extra advantage of this? Am I being to picky? I see this though all the time (and not only at Disney).

Agree? Disagree?
:hourglass

I completely agree with you. Some people walk that fine line between being pampered (or having someone else to take care of it for you) while on vacation and just being rude or inconsiderate to the other guests. :confused3

Unfortunately, that's probably the same guy who would leave a dirty straw on the ground at home and wait for someone else to clean it up.

Look, I want to be pampered (like you) on vaca as well and I don't plan on cleaning etc. but there's what's called COMMON COURTESY!

For example, I am not going to wash the hotel towels every night after my shower but I'm also not going to leave them strewn about the place. They will be in a neat pile so housekeeping knows they are dirty.

It's a matter of respect for others and some people just don't have it.

Could not have said it better. Unfortunately today far too many people have no respect for anybody or anything. This is true at WDW and all over. I am astonished to see garbage thown or just left on the streets, parking lots, etc.
Kind of wonder what the future will bring.

I agree. Sometimes I wonder what people's homes look like!

The same ones who don't pick up after themselves at the world don't outside the world either.

Many of them are those who throws garbage out of car windows as well.

being on vacation doesnt give me total right to be a complete slob. If I drop something I am going to clean it up.

I tend to think people who litter, don't pick up after themselves etc. are like that all the time, on vacation or not.

i may be the odd ball out, i'm the lady who always picks up the room before we leave each morning (all the used towel into the bathtub, at least throw the bed together) but i also have kids who might have left their security blanket in the bed (don't want to have to have the entire laundry room searched) or may have rolled thier swim suit up in one of the towels (again with the great laundry room search :) ).

i appreciate the hard work the folks at disney put into keeping the place clean (cleanest theme parks i've ever seen), so i figure if i can make their jobs a bit easier and quicker they will have the time to take care of the big messes (like the explosive ones we've seen in some rooms while walking down the halls :guilty: ).

We went to WDW a couple years back with some in-laws.

Our ILs' hotel room was cluttered and filthy (from them) -- clothes everywhere, MIL had brought a million toys for the kids that were strewn all over, there was chips and other food dropped on the floor. It was NASTY! We stayed a day longer than the ILs and when we walked past their room after they had checked out, I noticed that there was literally a crew of housekeepers cleaning the ILs' room. I told SIL later and she laughed!

On the other hand, DH and I hang our towels and put dirty laundry in a laundry bag and clean laundry in luggage or the dresser. We don't clean excessively, but do pick up after ourselves and our children.

I agree that it's a matter of respect -- people who make excessive messes are showing a lack of respect for the people who have to clean up that mess.

Yes. This is what we call common courtesy and living well. I can't imagine what would happen if my little guys blankie disappeard because it was tucked in a pile of blankets. I do just the same. It is a learned way of just moving through a room and naturally just putting things in the correct place. It shouldn't be a huge effort.

oh what we go through for our kid's security blankets! when my daughter was 5 we moved from a house to an apartment for 6 months while our new house was being completed. almost everything was stored in 4 storage lockers. somehow her "budgie" got lost in the move. i searched the stores and found what i thought was an identical "budgie". nope, not the same-did'nt feel the same. it became known as "new budgie". 6 months later while unpacking a box guess what turned up? BUDGIE! you could hear my daughter's screams across 2 states. "they" were like army buddies reunited after a long battle. she is now 11 and the only time i am "allowed" possesion is for the occasional washing (under her strict supervision :goodvibes ).

Barkley,

You aren't an oddball. It's just my hubby and I on trips, but I always try to pick up a little bit before leaving for the day. I make sure the dirty towels and washclothes are altogether, that my toiletries and whatnot are put up, etc. I can't stand leaving my room cluttered :)

do you also do the cleaning frenzy at home before you leave? no vacation is enjoyable if i know i am going to have to come home to clean!

I'm actually neater when I'm at a hotel on vacation! My room is a mess, but when I'm in a hotel, I don't want the cleaning people to think badly of me, so I don't leave things all over the place. They'll probably love me on my next trip--I'm going solo, so the room will be easy to clean!

But I agree--it drives me nuts to see people let garbarge drop on the ground, leave food on the tables at fast food places. It takes a few extra minutes to gather your garbarge and walk over to a trash can.

I don't think neat people become sloppy on vacation. I think sloppy people are sloppy on vacation.

we always "straighten up" the room ect, ( clean house before we leave too  ) but i do think some vacationers think they don't need to because someone else is there to do it. i've seen some very neat and careful about their own personal belongings who trash a hotel because it isn't their "job" to clean it up. just rude I guess ( and maybe a little snobbish "sense of Privlege")

I even stack dishes and make them easy to clear at the restaurants. I can't help myself! The servers are always thanking me, maybe it's just my "mom gene" that does it. I also tidy the room a bit, make sure all of our personal things are put up (stack all the stuffies on a chair, though, so mousekeeping can do fun stuff with them!)

I think it's just a matter of training. People weren't taught to pick up after themselves, so they don't know how...and (worse) aren't training their own kids, either.

It's the Mom in me too! The waiter at WCC "yelled" at me for straightening up the table. I too stack all the dishes, place all the paper items, straw wrappers, etc on a small plate. Why make life more difficult for the people working there.
