Vacation challenge - $3500 or less!!

Just a few hints - if you can, book air travel though the week rather than weekends - it might be cheaper (this can be hard if you can only get a week off between weekends, depends on your family). This way, as well, you will only have 2 evenings of weekend rates at hotels as well.

Have you thought of Disneyland? Prices are cheaper for park tickets and it's a whole different atmosphere. ::MickeyMo

^^^If you are persistant enough, I think you could do a DL/SoCal trip in that budget. If you love Disney, this is a great option. A very different experience than WDW, and you don't need as many days. Lots to do in So Cal inexpensively for your kids at this age. We've done WDW many times and DLR/SoCal three times with our kids and they LOVE the Cali. trips a lot!!

OP, just curious- what don't you like about the idea of cruising?

Having never cruised before, I can only tell you what I think I'm not going to like:

I'm afraid of getting sick (or having any member of my family get sick);

I've investigated the cost and although many people say it's a cheap vacation, I'm not seeing it. Maybe I'm just looking too far out, since we won't be traveling until July. Perhaps the cost has something to do with the time of the year.

Since there are 4 of us (including 2 teenage sons and a DH that are all 6 feet tall), I don't see how we are going to be comfortable in one cabin. They're all so small. Yes, we could book a bigger cabin, but that substantially drives the cost up.

I'm not completely opposed to it, but just can't seem to make it affordable enough to alleviate my fears.

Help!

We have thought about going California many times but we live in a very small town and are a bit intimidated by LA. Is it hard to get around? Do you have any inexpensive suggestions?

To the OP, have you considered the Smoky Mountains specifically Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg? There is tons to do there and you could definitely have a great vacation on that budget.

SoCal can be intimidating with it's size and traffic (probably the worst in the country) BUT it is such a great experience, it's a culture and climate like no other. If you do lots of planning, it is not that hard to get around, especially with mapquests, gps, etc. these days. There a lots of options for itineraries and budgets, depending on what you want to do, etc.
If you are truly interested, you can go to the California/West and Disneyland section of the boards there's a ton of info. there and a lot of people who know the area well to give great tips. I'd be happy to answer more quesions for you as well off of what we did, but we're not locals.

I would not let being intimidated with it stop you from going, it's so awesome!

OP, I also agree with this...we have not been, but will be there this spring.
From my research it can be very affordable and nice and lots to do. It sounds perfect for what you are looking for.

I can tell with your comments throughout your posts that you want everything tip top but you expect to pay peanuts. It just doesn't work that way, anywhere on vacation. I'm not trying to be mean, but you need to be realistic in your expectations or skip doing a vacation this year and have more money for a super trip next year.

If you are open minded then my best suggestions would be Las Vegas, National Parks, Mexico, or cruising.

There are tours of Red Rock Canyon and other state parks and the Hoover Dam with Vegas. You might be able to swing a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon. There are a lot of freebie attractions in Vegas like the Bellagio fountain and garden inside this casino. There's a pirate show at Treasure Island to see for free. There's a Lion's den in MGM-Grand. There are half price tickets for shows if you are willing to buy them on the day of performance. Your top shows won't have discounts, but you may be able to swing a few of them, as well. Your teenage boys would love the roller coaster rides at the New York, New York casino or the Safara casino. If you go to Downtown Vegas there's a light show that's kinda of neat to see. The buffets are reasonably priced and for growing boys they will do fine in them. I consider most of the buffets in Vegas to be better than the Disney ones. We love the buffet at the Wynn Casino. Airfare may be rough (look for sales or off peak times), but you have so many resorts there you can find a bargain on that level. Also, there are plenty of choices for all levels of cost. We almost never gamble when we go there. I'd rather introduce my boys this way to Vegas then on their own or with others that are in their peer group.

You have to do more driving, but it's so scenic to do National Parks. It's more of a working vacation doing driving, hiking, etc. You have to put more effort into this type of vacation.

With Mexico there are alot of all inclusive resorts. The surrounding areas have enough of sightseeing to keep you happy for a week. Snokeling can be a lot of fun there, too.

For cruising, you have to be willing to do an inside cabin to make it more affordable. The rooms that fit four will probably have bunk beds with two beds on an upper level. I have seen cruises lately that offer third and fourth passengers for free in the same cabin. If you get two, inside rooms I think it's still afforable. If you go from the ports of Boston or New York you may be able to drive there. Many of these cruises go into Canada. Shore excursions are where the higher costs can come into play; so, you will have to be careful on this count. The Bahamas are reasonable and Mexican cruises are affordable. We only use our cabin for sleeping and washing up; otherwise, we are on the go; so, we don't care about the cabin. There are websites that offer good deals, if you are flexible with your dates. The same cruise in prime time can cost double compared to a less popular time. If you can plan it pretty close to the time, you can get cut throat deals that way, too. The 90 day mark is another good time to be looking for dates. The cruise lines get nervous at that point that the ship won't fill up. I will agree washing up may be a challenge with 4 people to one cabin. My best suggestion there would be for two to take a shower in the evening and two to do it in the morning. Norwegian Cruise lines is less of a formal atmosphere and usually cheaper than comparable trips from other cruise lines. You don't have a specific time for dinner which I think would be appealing for the boys.

To get a cheaper vacation you may have to be willing to do more of the planning, etc.

We personally have stayed at this house before. It is the best and at a great price. Look at Vrbo #77024. It's about 2 hours from wdw, 30 minutes from Tampa. Plenty to do. We went to see Tampa Bay Rays play and got walkup tickets for $15 a piece. My teen son's absolutely loves this place. And neighbors are sooo nice.

To be honest - I was thinking the same thing.

OP - I think that you have too high of expectations for a trip and would be better off waiting. There's nothing wrong with that but I think that anything you do that would be budget - you would not enjoy.

I don't mean to be rude, but I agree. I'm not trying to judge, but it sounds like you like the "higher end" vacations (which is fine), and aren't happy if it isn't. I'm thinking you'd be better off saving the money. I'd hate to see you spend that much only to find out you hated it. That is still a lot of money. Maybe you could put it towards higher upgrades in your house?

I understand what some are saying, but I don't think $3,500 for a family vacation for a family of 4 is peanuts to have a high quality experience. I know of a lot of families that would love to have that kind of money to spend on a vacation. I think with a lot of research, creativity and flexibility, a family can have an awesome vacation on that kind of budget. OP is asking for ideas...lots of people on this board travel and are good at getting their dollars to go as far as they can. WDW, Universal, cruises, Mexico are the main staples of vacations. If OP wants to get outside the box, it might take a lot of suggestions before one appeals. There's been a lot of info. about travel that my friends and I have gotten here that we would never have known about otherwise.

OP, I hope you can keep getting some suggestions...

If you may want to go Florida, maybe do the Bush Garden Tampa/ Sea world tickets. You could fly in Tampa and do Bush Gardens, drive to Orlando and do Sea world, and maybe a day at Disney if you do the give day program. The Bush Garden/Sea world tickets are pretty cheap at 99.99 per person.

We did both, Busch and SeaWorld in Dec 2009 and we liked it; we spent two days in each park. I didn't miss Disney. Both parks have a dining plan. You can do a shuttle from Orlando to Tampa. The give a day is a good idea to get one day at Disney for your fix there.

Cape Canaveral makes for a good side trip, as well. You have the beach there, too.

I'm another who would suggest this area with active teens. There is white water rafting, hiking, mini-golf, horseback riding, Dollywood (many shows, but some good rides too) etc......tons of things to do. It shouldn't be too expensive and crowded if you go during the week. Drive down on the weekend, stay all week and drive home the following week.

We have also done San Diego. Love it!! There are so many things to do. Look at Southwest Airlines for cheaper flights (we paid less than $100/each way from Chicago). We did the wild animal park, zoo, battleships, beach day, Legoland (too young for your kids) -- wonderful time and you can get a SeaWorld pass to include a Sea World, Wild Animal park and the SD Zoo for $121/adult -- this is good for 5 days. There are lots of hotel choices -- you don't need to stay waterfront if you are on a budget. Car rentals are pretty cheap. Just to give you an idea: Airfare $1000, Hotel for 6 nights $800, Attractions $700, Car $200, Beach day -free, and that still leaves around $800 for food and other things to do.

Boston to Bermuda Norweigian Cruise line! You sail to Bermuda, park the boat there, stay a few nights, then you come back to Boston. So its like a flotaing hotel, and you could drive to Boston instead of flying anywhere.

I am not a huge fan of cruising, but this one is 7 days and only 2 are actually sailing. SO it is like using the ship as a hotel and transportation.

someone mentioned smokey mountains and gaitlinburg, AWESOME place!! You can rent a cabin, there are sooooo many deals out there if you google cabins in that area. There is so much to do there too. What about chicago? There is a lot to do there too, or even NYC. I know you said your in New England and want to get away, but sometimes the best trips are closer to home than you think. :confused3

This might be totally out there, but have you thought about driving? Seriously driving even with gas prices being as high as they are is still cheaper than four adults flying. I have no idea what you feel would be driving too far for you but it should only take a day or two to get where you want to go with two drivers. If you are able to drive you can use the money you would save from flight tickets to do the stuff you want to do.

If driving is not something you are willing to do try flying in and out of popular airports. There are more flights going in and out giving you a better chance of finding a better deal. Also going during the off season of whatever you want to do.

Disney is now doing amazing deals off hotel rooms.

If you were to book Disney you could do:

Disney Port Orleans Resort French Quarter with 4 day park passes and quick service dining during 5/10-5/13 for $1949.92 for 4 adults.

OR

Disney Port Orleans Riverside with a water view, 4 day park passes, and quick service dining during 5/10-5/13 for $1908.84

Disney

That leaves you with $1551 for everything else. Yeah it's a shorter vacation but you still get to go and under budget! If it takes 2 days drive you can do it in 8 days. Good Luck :yay:

If you have passports and can leave the country, there are awsome deals to Mexico. Last summer we spent $2800 (including airfare from Chicago) for a week at a deluxe all inclusive resort in the Mayan Riviera. It is about an hour south of Cancun. We stayed at the Barcelo Maya Palace. There were two adults and two teens. The resort was nicer than any of the Disney resorts. It was gorgeous and so much to do. Check out www.cheapcarribean.com. They have some very good deals right now for Mexico through the month of June. I priced out a trip for four from Chicago and it came in under $3000 for an all inclusive at a top notch resort. My kids, whom are Disney crazy, have said many times that they can't wait to go back to the Palace!
