With the new configuration of the jumbos and the introduction of the Airbuses, the extra legroom seats don't lend themselves well to a family of 4, we didn't mind so much being split 2 and 2 on the airbus, but flying out and back recently on the new config jumbo we were again split 2 and 2 on the way out in a row of three seats with a passenger in the window seat in both rows. The passengers in the window seat was a couple who had also been split also. On the way home we were again on a jumbo split 1 and 3 in separate rows. The two passengers I sat next to gave me the dirtiest look when I rocked up to my seat to find their handbags on it! They were obviously counting on having it to themselves, my poor DW had the pleasure of our two very tired but unable to sleep children for the flight! In a very long winded way Im trying to say that we would probably not book extra legroom again as it guarantees you will be split. when we bag dropped at DTD we even tried to give up the extra legroom to sit together but no joy! any thoughts or tips??

We have nearly always been split as we generally fly PE and are a family of 3.

We would always be in a 2 and then 1 across the aisle. TBH it never bothered us we just accepted it.

If you don't want to be split or sitting next to another prison the next thing is not to book the extra legroom and just get 4 in the middle.

yes, I guess for you then it doesn't suit but surely you would have known the seat configuration options when you booked?

Our party of 4 were also split 3+1 coming home but my youngest is 13 so it didn't worry us plus we had some empty (regular) seats nearby so ended up spreading out there anyway:)

Before the refurbs some configurations had rows of 4 available as extra legroom so not everyone would be aware that these no longer exist. (Especially as the staff member at VA I spoke to recently told me they still exist).

We are also a family of four and initially were interested in booking the extra legroom seats but once we found that they were no longer in a row of 4 we booked PE instead (DS is only 11 months at time of travel so we were going to book him a seat in Economy but it worked out almost the same to do 3 PE seats instead).

For our trip next May we are a larger group and have booked seat plus to give ourselves more room. :)

No we weren't aware of the seat config on the jumbos, or we would have reconsidered, plus we didn't have the knowledge of what plane we would be on 12 months out, on past experience we sat together on jumbos in extra legroom. We knew what the config on the Airbus would be, 2+2 wouldn't have been so bad. Hey ho live and learn.
