Do men normally wear a suit and tie or do they wear a jacket, nice pair of pants with a tie? I was going to have my husband wear his tan suit but I'm not sure if that's to formal or is that on par with what most men wear. Thanks for the help.

My husband almost always wears a suit to V&A, although he has worn seperates once or twice. My sons tend to vacillate between - there's not much difference, since both are comprised of slacks/shirt/tie/jacket ! Enjoy !
I've been there a few times, and I think I've worn a suit & tie all but once, when I just hadn't packed one, so I did the slacks, blazer & tie route. If he's uncomfortable in a suit, it won't be because he's the only one wearing one, it'll be just because he doesn't like wearing the suit. Being a guy, I've never really paid that much attention to what other guys are wearing, so all I can tell you is that every guy in the place was either wearing a suit & tie or the slacks, blazer & tie thing, and probably more than 50% were in suits on most occassions. Either one is fine & appropriate, but DW & I enjoy the "niceness" factor that inspires us to dress up....in other settings, I'm far more comforable in my swimsuit & a t-shirt, but someplaces make it all worthwhile...
Ties are not a requirement, but are always a nice touch. I wore a suit and tie our first time to V&As and went with sportcoat and slacks (no tie) my 2nd time. I was comfortable with both - I would say whatever is most comfortable for your husband.
We just ate at V&A last Monday. I had on a blue sportcoat, tan slacks, disney tie, and brown loafers. About half the men had suits--and half did not. I'd say a quarter of the men w/o suits had no tie.
As has been noted, either option is just fine. Dress how you feel comfortable--and how it all might affect how you need to pack!
Wow, thanks for the responses!!! A lot more information than I thought I'd get on this question. Sorry for the slow response but we've been out of town for Mother's Day. Thanks again all your input was great!!!
