UY vs. booking time

We are in the ROFR stage with our first DVC contracts! Excited to start planning some trips.

This may be a dumb question, or answered many times in other places, but I can't seem to find it. Ok, here goes...

We have a September UY, with 335 points coming Sept 1st 2014. After we have all of our membership information and I call to make a reservation, how will the points be handled? I will be calling BEFORE Sept 1st, but the travel dates will be between the Sept 2014 and August 31st 2015 time period. We have 0 points in the 2013 UY.

Will this be considered a "borrowing" situation since we are reserving before our points actually come? Or do the points come from your travel year vs. your booking year?

Thanks!

You need to have points available for the time period when they will be used, i.e. the date you'll stay.

You can book your home resort for travel between Sept 1, 2014 and Aug 31, 2015 at 11 months before check-in date using your 2014 UY points.
You can book your non-home resorts for travel between Sept 1, 2014 and Aug 31, 2015 at 7 months before check-in date using your 2014 UY points.
Your points must be in your account for when you travel not when you can book.

When using home resort points (BWV points to book BWV, AKV points to book AKV, etc.) you can book 11 months prior to your check-in date. When using non-home points (SSR points to book BWV for example) you cannot book until you are 7 months or less from your check-in date. In both cases, this is regardless of your UY. All that is required is that you have enough points in the UY in which you will travel to pay for that stay.

With a September UY:
Your Sep 2014 points can be used for stays from 9/1/14 - 8/31/15
Your Sep 2015 points can be used for stays from 9/1/15 - 8/31/16
Your Sep 2014 points can be used for stays from 9/1/15 - 8/31/17
and so on through the end of your contract.

A trip that falls between Sep 1, 2014 and Aug 31, 2015 is within your 2014 UY. You can use 2014 UY points, points banked from your 2013 UY into your 2014 UY, and can also borrow points from your 2015 UY to book that stay.

In theory - you could book a stay requiring more than 335 points (Grand Villas can eat up a lot of points) checking in on Sept 1, 2014 (but not even a day before) - your 335 2014 points and borrowed 2015 points (however many you have)

Thanks everyone! Makes sense. Think I'm finally starting to get a handle on all of this DVC stuff. Now just to pass rofr and start making plans! :)

This may have been answered above, but I want to make sure I understand.

Let's say you have a JAN UY year. If you want to book for Jan 2015 now, can you borrow Jan 2016 points for that stay? If not, when can you?

There is no Jan UY but yes, if a Jan UY did exist and you wanted to book a stay for Jan 2015 you could borrow Jan 2016 points for that stay if you did not have enough banked and current points to pay for the reservation.

And, to make sure I completely understand;

If you need to borrow points to cover a reservation, that's done when you book the reservation and cannot be undone, right?

Yes, once you make a reservation and need to borrow, you can not undo it.

To add to Sandisw's response, yes you can borrow points only when in the process of booking a reservation.

If you later cancel that reservation, those borrowed points stay in the UY into which they were borrowed. You cannot "unborrow" them.
