UY question. Need your advice!

I really need advice, but first this is what we need from our possible DVC resale purchase:

We will use it to do land trips pretty much every year, but we want to mix in a cruise every two or three times we travel. We would want to do a DCL cruise in mid-June (after school ends but before camp). We would want an ocean view room, which I hear are the hardest ones to get within a year of sailing.

Knowing that we want to cruise in June, would June be our best UY? We were considering a December UY with thoughts only of planning land trips. Then I thought of our strong desire to cruise here and there, and it's important to us to be able to get the room we need points-wise. Don't want a vernadah room or inside. Virtual porthole, please!

Should we forget about the December UY and go for a June UY instead? Help! UY's and their in's and out's are very confusing.

I would go with a Dec UY since you have 8 months (July) to bank your points if you decide to not use them in June.

Well, actually if you get a June UY, then you have until January to bank points if you didn't go in Dec. So either one would work for you! :)

The usual concerns regarding Use Year do not have the same effect when using DVC points for non-DVC options. Those who will usually travel to DVC resorts in June will find a June Use Year very practical, but options like the cruise do not offer much flexibility if you need to cancel since the points would be "Reservation" points meaning they could only be used for other non-DVC options and cannot be banked.

If December is a good fit for your DVC resort reservation plans, I'd just stick with that instead of trying to develop a Use Year strategy based on cruise reservations. You'll also want to get moving on that resale contract since you'll need to have an accepted offer in less than 60 days from now in order to be able to use those points for a cruise or other Disney Collection option.

Gooc luck! :)

Are you planning for June even for your land trips? If so, I would select a UY Feb-Jun. I disagree with the PP, I think December is a poor UY in case your annual trips bleed later into the summer. June would also work well if you also plan to travel over Christmas break.

I'll admit I am biased against summer vacations because of the heat. So my advice probably wouldn't be that great for you...especially after Doc's post about not considering cruising when determining UY. My UY strategy is based on never needing to consider a summer trip. But I live in Mardi Gras land where kids are out of school 3 days but the rest of the country is not. So we will be able to choose that on the years it doesn't align with President's Day week.

I would say June will be cruise time and late August will be land trips most years. Knowing that, which UY is better?

June would be MUCH better than December for DVC resort trips in August. The reason is that if you should need to cancel, you would have plenty of time to either re-use or bank the points from the cancelled reservation. You'd have until the end of January to bank the points or until May 31 to re-use them for another reservation.

A December Use Year would be great for trips in December, January and February and not so good for trips in September, October and November. If you are unlikely to have to cancel reservations, then Use Year is just when your points are renewed each year and won't really have any affect on your travel plans.

As Doc said. June would be the best for you. You may also want to consider an April UY in case you might cruise in May. You have until the end of Nov to bank April points.

If you are not already in a resale contract, I would do it soon. Resales closing after March 20, 2011 will not be able to exchange for cruises.

I have a December UY and love it. You have until end of July to Bank. Perfect if you travel in June and July.

For us, we travel at end of June, July and December.

Just pick a UY in which you do not plan on traveling withi the 3 months before your UY rolls over.
