Hi, I'm a total newbie that is seriously considering DVC. I already take all Disney vacations and plan on doing more.

1) We usually travel July, early August, what would be the UY month?

2) Explain Developer Points

Thanks!

Let's see, I am not an expert on UY yet. So hopefully someone else can help you there.

As for developer's points, they are a special incentive currently being offered by Disney for people buying at least 100 points at either SSR or AKV. Now, since you would be a new member, if you buy through Disney, you would need to buy at least 160 points. So, for example, let's say that you buy 160 points at AKV from Disney. Assuming the double developer's point incentive is still being offered when you buy and that you choose that incentive, you would get:
In 2007:
160 points (the normal points that come with your contract)
320 developer's points
In 2008 & succeeding years:
160 points each year.

The developer's points have some special rules:
1) they are only good for 12 months from the day that you buy your contract (not from your closing date)
2) you can only make reservations with them 7 months out
3) you can not bank them (or transfer I think)

Use Year is largely irrelevant for most people, but if you're typically going to travel at the same time every year, and there any chance of cancelling a reservation, you should choose a Use Year that is less than six months before that time. That way, if you cancel the reservation, you have a greater chance to bank the points that have been freed up by the cancellation - since after six months into your use year, you can only bank a decreasing percentage of your points...

On the site linked below I've tried to break things down in simpler terms on banking, borrowing and Use Years (and welcome feedback)...

Thanks donconeill, the Disney Untangled did help me alot.
