Just wondering if anyone has utilized their DVC points for a stay in the Caribbean, for example: StThomas has a Marriott Frenchmens participating. Wondering your experience. Is it worth using up Florida points for other stays?

Soon to be DVC!!!:cool1:

Ultimately you'll have to decide what's worth it to you. I'd say this resort and location is a reasonable trade using DVC but most are not.

I was hoping this thread was going to catch on as I was curious as to people's thoughts. popcorn::

It's practically impossible to trade into the properties II offers in St. Thomas and especially St. John. That's why we bought in St. John. 95% of the owners there use their weeks and DO NOT trade out. As for the other Caribbean properties, I have no idea, but those are IMPOSSIBLE!

The reason you are not getting much discussion on DVC II exchanges is mostly due to lack of DVC points being used to trade in II.

Most locations in the Caribbean are very difficult trades, especially when the kids are out of schools and summer time. Your best chance of a successful Caribbean exchange is for the month of September. followed by October, early November, early December and May.

Alot of the "top" II destinations are extremely difficult, regardless of season. That would include most of the Marriotts, St John, Atlantis, Aruba (Marriotts).

Put your request in as far as possible, be flexible, if you can travel off-peak do it.

Good Luck!

I'm not exactly sure yet. I'm also considering renting my points then using the funds to rent the week i want or a direct trade.

Excellent plan. In most cases, it will be better to rent the points and rent a week at the resort you want to go.

You may also want to try redweek.com and see what they have for rentals. You can score some very good deals, often better than having to rent your DVC points...
