Uterine ablation?

Went to see the OB/GYN today (as opposed to the nurse practitioner I saw on Thurs).

He seemed more concerned with the enlargement of my uterus than the ovarian cysts. Anyway, he is recommending laparoscopy and doing a uterine ablation at that time.

Has anyone had this done? Care to share results (PM me if you wish). This is a huge decision as, according to what I have read, it would pretty much make having more children not likely.

If anyone could share, I would so appreciate it.

DH is himself at the doctor right now. Haven't had the chance to talk to him about what he thinks. Mom is on vacation, so I can't talk to her. So...you guys are it for now!!

It was on the list of possible treatments for some problems I'd been having. However, due to the size of my uterus, I had twins 8.7 and 7.12, hehe, i have to have paps done twice a year. I came close to getting a hysterectomy also. Now things are much better on their own.

Kristy,

Had this done in March-it has been a success. I had the Novasure procedure done, under general and had mild cramping that night. I would have been back to work the next day, however, I had a vein stripping the next morning.

If you google Novasure, you'll find tons of info from the manufacturer of the machine. I've got a DVD around here that my Gyn gave me-if I find it, I'll pm you and send it your way.

Thanks to the DIS, I found out about the procedure. I wasn't a good candidate for a hysterectomy and the ablation was a perfect alternative.

I was scheduled to have Novasure this Friday. But I decided to wait until Jan. or Feb. I had a few questions I wanted to talk to my GYN about first. I am kind of regretting my decision to wait now. :sad2:

There is a discussion board for ablations, but the DIS won't accept the link. It is an ezboard site. I think it kind of freaked me out a little though, and made me think of the questions to ask my Dr.!

No, you should not have more children after this procedure.

I had one done about 9 or 10 years ago. It was great for awhile, but it didn't last forever. I had it done on a friday and went back to work the next day which was a mistake. I should have been able to take the weekend off, but the Dr assured me I would be fine.

My friend had this done and is satisfied with the results. She knew for sure she wasn't interested in having any more children though. Good luck with your decision!

The only thing to keep in mind before getting this procedure is that if you were to get a tumor, it would be harder to detect early. I almost had the procedure a couple of years ago but my doctor decided against it because I have a family history of uterine cancer. I ended up with a hysterectomy. If uterine cancer doesn't run in your family, then an ablation is a great alternative to major surgery. Most people have wonderful results!

I had the HerOption procedure done in June. It is a freezing ablation done in the office, no anesthesia. I had some cramping when the doc stuck something up there, not sure what, and the numbing shots in my cervix, 4 of them to be exact, were a bit uncomforable. Other than that, the procedure was relatively easy. My first period after that was horrendous!!!!! And we were on a beach vacation, go figure  . The 2 periods that I have had since them have been very managable. Much better than before the procedure. Heavy periods were why I had it done in the first place. I go back to see the doc in January. If everything is going fine, then it's a done deal. If my periods get heavy again, I'm having the sucker yanked out!!!

I had it done about 5 years ago and it was a success. I was cycle free for over 3 years. I had it done for heavy, frequent, painful periods. I had cramping that lasted longer than that. I was down for about 4 days. I'm 39 now and my doctor just offered to do a hysterectomy which I am planning on doing after the first of the year. :thumbsup2

The things I have read on ablation say that any future pregnancy after ablation can be very dangerous for you and the baby. Are you reading anything that contradicts this?

why does your doc think your uterus is enlarged?

That would be my first question.
Usually uterine ablation is used to correct abnormal bleeding. Is that what your problem is?

The medical community in my area pushes this proceedure and I fought against having one. I've read too many unsuccessful stories to make me think I wanted to fuss with having one and still end up having a hysterectomy a year or two later.

Good luck with your decision.

This is really a SMALL WORLD...I am doing this tomorrow ,,and a bit freaked out by it...so I just posted on the boards asking questions, and signed backon to see your post.....I was told I am getting the one where the put water in ya and then HEAT it to 90 degrees and then cool it down...my GYNO said I should have very minor bleeding after wards,,I am worried about it though,,,I AM A BIG CHICKEN!!!!! No, that's why I said that about future children not likely. It said chances of pregnancy are slim, but if it does, then it is dangerous.

He is not sure why it is enlarged, one of the reasons for the lap. Yes, the ablation itself would be for the heavy bleeding.

That's the type my doc would use, too. Good luck!

i had this done last monday. The one by novasure, literally burns out the inside of your uterus so no lining is formed again, hence little or no bleeding ever again. Because there is no lining, pregnancy is not a possibility afterwards. Laposcopic procedures usually mean an incision is cut in the stomach around the belly button and this is not necessary for this type of ablation. my dr thinks that this will completely stop my periods. I had to have an abdominal and ******l ultra sound as well as a uterine biopsy before. worked next day, had some minor amounts of drainage for 3 days................

A website my mom goes to bleeps out "COCKER" spaniel. She types in "pecker" spaniel to get around the word filter. :rotfl2:

I had the Novasure ablation 3yrs ago and it changed my life. I has such heavy bleeding every month, my hematocrit would drop to about 7(very anemic) with each period. I would take double iron for the rest of the month and get it up to 10 (still quite anemic), then start all over again month after month. My doc offered a hyst, but I'm not big on taking out healthy body parts. So I agreed to try the ablation.

It was a cake walk. I've had migraines that were far worse. The next day i took my kids out for a 4-day camping trip in the mountains. No problem.

The one thing you absolutely must be sure of is that you will never get pregnant. It can be life-threatening to you if you do. And you have to have regular paps, etc. I have not been sorry for one second that I did this. I went from being house-bound for 7 days a month and spending $25 in feminine supplies to forgetting when I had my last period. I haven't bought a tampon in 2-1/2yrs. I still spot and have PMS, so I know I'm still having periods. but it is soooo much better. I have my life back!
