Using your cell phone as a Wi-Fi connection?

I have an LG ENV3. A friend was saying that if your phone has internet you can use it as a wi-fi connection for your lap top. We have the unlimited data plan with Mobile web on our ENV3's. I'm not sure how to set this up (if it's even possible). They said they had to download something to their phone to make this work.....I've looked but I can't find anything.

Any ideas.

Thanks!

Thanks! I had just found that. Looks like the ENV and ENV2 are on the list but not the ENV3........guess I'll look for another option.

From what I've read about your phone, you can use it to tether; but you can't use it as a wi-fi connection. By tethering, that means you can hook up phone to you computer, via USB connection.

Even though you have the unlimited data plan, and depending on your carrier, you may have to pay extra for the broadband connection.

Thanks! I will have to check with Verizon and see.....though info from the sales associates can vary from one to the other..... Depending on what the cost is if one is involved.....might be better off to add the Mi-Fi as a line. We live out in the boonies.......no DSL......no cable (they won't bring it across or under the railroad tracks for just us)....have looked at satelite but this might be a better solution. Dial up is way to slow.

It does sound like a mi-fi would work the best (be sure to check signal str and such where you live)

What about upgrading or changing to a phone that will allow you to tether and get wi-fi from it?

That's an idea too. DS might be getting a notebook for Christmas though and the Mi-Fi will allow up to five devices to access it at one time. Not so sure I could do that with a cell phone. Will have to go out to Verizon and see what the best $ and service options will be. We get good signal strength at home on our cells. (there is a tower about 200 yards from our house) I am assuming they use the same tower.

If you go through Verizon it is a separate Data plan from the $29.99 one. Last I looked I think it was $40 or $50 for the plan you could use to tether the phone to the laptop.
