Using US pay-as-you-talk sim cards?

Can anyone tell me the cheapest and easiest way to get PAYT phones in the US? It's so me and DW can keep in touch with my sister and her family when we split off to do seperate things while we're there. We wont be using them to ring home.

I thought about buying two dirt cheap phones or alternatively taking old phones and putting sim cards in. Can anyone tell me how to do this

Ok hope this helps when we were over last november we got some cell phones over there we bring my sister and nephew both teenagers so it was handy for us to keep in touch with them we got phones from walmart called tracfone they cost $18.88 each just a cheap little mobile but worked for us we also got a 60 min card each that cost $19.88 each we were also able to text each other and text back to Ireland we got 3 texts home per minute used.......

And on buying a sim card over there we did that a few years ago with t mobile over there and they charged us $70 and it came with 30 minutes big rip off if you ask me don't know how it works now or what they charge

I just got back last week and bought a Tracphone from Walmart. Set up was a bit of a pain but it's not a bad phone and worked well enough.

The phone that is linked to in the quote above is not quite the bargain it seems though - I had a long look at it in Walmart and you have to add $30 of credit to it before you get the extra 300 minutes... OK if you are going to be using it a lot maybe but for occasional use I think the Tracphone is a better deal.
