I haven't used one since booking my honeymoon almost 20 years ago, so I have questions I hope some of you will answer.

With the availability of online info and booking, what are the advantages of using a travel agent these days?

I contacted one about travel to the Carribbean this spring since air travel seems crazy to get through the various islands (long layovers, etc), but it looks to me like I can book the same for $200 less and get "more" at some resorts.:confused3

Can I get/use my rewards when using a TA? (example - deals for Marriott Members, Carlson rewards, etc. or does using a TA exclude those?).

Thanks for helping me understand TAs better.

As far as Disney Travel Agents, be sure to use Disney approved Travel Agents, like Dreams Unlimited. Don't just go to the closest travel agent office and hope to get lucky.

I can't speak for WDW travel agents but I will say that when I book a cruise I will be using a travel agent because they charge the same as the cruise lines but provide incentives like a cabin credit that the cruise lines don't provide. Our last cruise we received a $100 credit to our sail and sign card. It paid for our gratuities :)

It didn't hurt that I won the last game for the big pot at deck bingo and had another $500 added to my account, lol!

You can definitely get all your rewards, miles, etc. when using a travel agent.

The only thing I have encountered you can't really do is use those miles when using a travel agent... unless you convert them to a prepaid card or have them apply the points to your credit card to counteract travel purchases you have made.

Travel agencies all offer their own incentives, but they should never charge a booking fee. You should never pay MORE to book with a travel agent.

When I booked my Disney cruise last year, I used an agent. I am not sure if she is Disney approved or not. I checked all the available resource online and picked her because she gave me the most on board credit. I would use an agent only under such circumstance. I always do my research first.
