Using transferred points vs. "regular" points

Just a question: Is it true that transferred points have to used before any regular points?

Last fall I had some points transferred into my account, but was unable to use them as planned in December. When I called to book our latest trip, MS used transferred points first, and when I questioned it, the CM stated that was the way the system took the points and she couldn't do anything about it.

My points will expire before the transferred ones, so obviously I wanted to use those first.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

I don't know the answer but if this is the way it is supposed to be, then it will certainly make a difference when and if I ever secure a transfer in terms of which points I use.

This might have been because of the different use year of the transferred points. The CM might have wanted you to use the points that expire soonest first.

A month ago I had to go through the ordeal of banking transferred points. It must be a very manual process for MS. It took 2 days to book and needed to be split in 2 different reservations. Not sure if that will affect you.

The transferred points will expire 5 months after the other ones, which is why I wanted to use the regular ones first.

This does not make any sense. I would call back and speak to someone else. Transferred points should have the status as your own points, subject to the use year. It only makes sense that the points that expire first, would be used first.
Please report back, as many of us would like to know if this is correct.

I'd call back and talk to someone else. I think with any of your points, it's always your choice which ones to use for any particular reservation.

I just made a reservation yesterday with banked HHI points of my own and I am sitting on 230 transferred June 2011 UY points that will be banked on June 1. Since those OKW points are for a trip in June 2012, I sort of forgot that I still had them until the CM reviewed my current point balance after she made my reservation. I would definitely call back, and maybe speak to a manager. You should be able to use your points in any order you want, with the exception of borrowing first.

It is my understanding that you can not bank borrowed points, this is why they use them first.

OP here....called MS again today and spent quite a while on the phone with a very helpful and patient CM. When all was said and done, they went ahead and put the transferred points back into my account, and took the expiring points they were supposed to in the beginning. The CM couldn't figure out what had happened with the account, but agreed that it shouldn't have happened in the first place. She had no idea why the previous CM booked it the way she did, but I'm just glad it's fixed now.

So glad to hear that it was an error. I am contemplating diong transfers in if the right add on contract does not come along and it would put a bit of a kink in the plan if that flexibility had not been there.

OP, glad it worked out. I was a little afraid to call and make a reservation today for August as I have VGC points that were transferred in to my account that I was afraid would get messed up. I did NOT want those used. Luckily I got a great CM and she used my "regular' points before I could even ask. She knew not to touch the transferred in points. Phew.
