I have also just recently decided that I want us (family of 5) to visit Italy. Because of the pricey airfare during the summer months, it looks like summer 2007 might be more realistic - there was someone on the disboard recently who wrote a report on the Cordial Golf Residence in Tuscany. I cannot find the thread. Most hotels only accomodate two people (yes some three and some have suites - pricey). I wish there was one we could trade into for Rome. We definitely want to spend time in Rome in addition to some other area, not sure if we want to stay up north or visit family in Sicily. There are very few options to trade into - since you plan on going next year, please let us know what you decide/come up with. Thanks.

) and at least one day at Pompeii. I went on a day trip from Rome to Pompeii and it wasn't long enough, by the time we got there we only had about 3-4 hours to go round the ruins. If you have enough time try to stay a few days on the Amalfi coast and take a trip from there. It is possible to hire a guide for the day, who would pick you up from your hotel and take you around Pompeii itself. It's a huge area and unless you have someone who knows where to find a lot of the interesting things you can easily miss them. IMHO it's money well spent. A lot of the personal guides are students studying archeology/history and do the guide stuff to help pay their tuition as well as to learn and use their knowledge first hand.
