Using points for Nashville RCI - have you been there?

This year we aren't going to Disney World, but I need to get to Nashville for a Convention in July...so I used my point to get a week at the Wyndham Nashville resort. I am excited, it looks nice and I have my whole week planned out.
I read somewhere that there is a shuttle from the Wyndham to Downtown. Anyone have information on it? I am hoping to save my husband from driving the half hour back and forth to Music City Center to pick me up and bring me back during the break we have.
Any other tips?
Thanks in advance!

We stayed there a few years ago for a Spring Break trip and had a good time. Our room was very nice (the kitchen was HUGE). It was cold the week we were there (DH did not enjoy scraping ice off the rental car each morning--everyone we came in contact with talked about unseasonably cold it was), so we didn't use any of the outdoor amenities, but the kids swam in the indoor pool a couple of times. That was "meh"--the outdoor pool looks much, much nicer. My biggest frustration was how much they constantly hounded us to come to the "open house" where they could tell us about and sell us Wyndham points. We weren't interested, but a polite, firm "no" was not accepted. We learned after the first couple of times to never answer the room phone. We got 4-5 messages on our room voice mail each day telling us all about the open house, telling us we were required to attend, that we must come to sign our "sales paperwork", etc. That said, this may be very typical of RCI properties--it is the only one we've used our points for, so this may just be par for the course. Once we stopped answering the phone, we had a very nice vacation--just lots of voice mails to delete.

We rented a car because we were going all over the place, so we didn't use their shuttle. No help on that, sorry!

No other tips on the resort, but if you are interested in the touristy stuff we did, I'm happy to share!

I wouldn't recommend trying to take breaks from Music City Center to anywhere not walking distance.

Thank you for the information! I'll warn my husband not to pick up the phone. And yes! What did you do? We have 2 days (maybe 3) where we will be able to drive into Nashville. One day we are going to Memphis. and 2 days I have to be at the convention, so my husband and son will be going to Dave and Busters one day and the Lane Motor Museum another day. I am at a loss on really what to see in Nashville. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I see what you are saying - it looks like the "30 minute" ride to the resort would really take about an hour...so what's the point, i'd have to turn around and come right back.

Yeah. Nashville has somewhat bananas traffic and there is a lot of construction as well.

In the downtown-ish area, we enjoyed the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, even though none of us are necessarily country music superfans, it was cool to see all of the history and memorabilia. We also did a ghost walk/tour in downtown Nashville one night. My 11 year old son marked that as his favorite activity. And the Tennessee History Museum in downtown is a good way to spend a couple hours. If you need an outside place for your son (I'm not sure of his age) or if he is a Percy Jackson fan, the Parthenon is neat and it seems like it was in that general area.

We toured the Jack Daniel's distillery, which is a bit outside of Nashville, but it was really interesting. Even my kids, who were 11 and 13 at the time, thought that the process was interesting. It's located in a dry county, so no tastings, but the information and the history were cool. That same day we saw the Cumberland Caverns, so they must be in the same direction. My boys really liked walking around in the caverns, as well.

The Hermitage, which was Andrew Jackson's home, was beautiful. Regardless of how I (or anyone) may feel about him as a president or person (I'm looking at you, Indian Removal Act), the historical value of the home is clear and there is so much to explore. It was eye opening for my kids (we live in Colorado, so we have different kinds of history here) to see the living quarters of those who were held as slaves, etc. And history aside, the grounds are beautiful, as is the house. In a similar vein, Belle Meade Plantation was also very interesting and beautiful (they raised racehorses during the Civil War period and now it is a winery--I still order wine from them six years later, they had some that we enjoyed so much and can't get here) and we also toured Carnton Plantation (are you familiar with the book "Widow of the South"--this is the house) and the graveyard there. All are interesting Civil War historical sites and again, a type of history that my kids just don't get living in the west, so it was good for them to see things firsthand that they only read about. Your mileage on that may vary depending on your son's age and where you currently live. These three are not close together, we did them on three separate days, but they are all in the same vein and so with only a couple of days you would need to pick and choose.

Make sure to try Nashville Hot Chicken while you are there--we liked Hattie B's A LOT!! What some fast food chains are currently passing off as Nashville Hot Chicken cannot even compare--get the real thing.

And in the realm of the truly kitschy, there is a Duke's of Hazard museum right by the hotel--it won't take much time, but it was a fun blast from the past for DH and I and made my boys interested in watching some old episodes, which they find hilarious.

We wanted to tour the campus of Vanderbilt University and just ran out of time--but it looks beautiful and I love walking college campuses.

We had such a good time on our vacation there--I'd love to go back.

Thanks for helping me re-live what was a really great Spring Break!!

The country music hall of fame is great. I also recommend visiting the Ryman auditorium. Either a tour or better see if anyone you would be interested in seeing is playing there that week. The acoustics are amazing! One of my favorite childhood memories is seeing Faith Hill at the Ryman. Also if you have any interest at all, I recommend checking out the Grand Ole Opry if you’ve never been. The nightlife in downtown is also always a ton of fun. Also not sure of your sons age but my friends kids always love to eat at the aquarium in Opry Mills. The Opryland hotel is also neat to go walk around and look at. I live an hour and a half south of Nashville and my best friend lives there, but most of our visits are spent trying to keep her 3 kids under 5 entertained, so not a ton of exploring. Nashville also has great shopping!

We've stayed there twice for a week each, once with 12 villas all on exchange for a large family trip non DVC. It's very nice but they are aggressive on the sales side. We had a car so didn't use their shuttle. I'd call the resort directly.

Thank you!! My son is 14. He's pretty go with the flow, but I'm trying to find balance since he really isn't a country music fan. I was looking at Ryman for the tour. We will probably do that.
