Using Points for Friday and Saturday???!!!

We pay cash at the DVC resort we are at and catch a discount when available. Link the ressies and never move a muscle. Great plan that works for us.

We originally purchased points with the idea of spending a full week in a 2 bedroom. We HATE to move, but will do it if we have to. Our usual MO is to stay put for 10-11 nights. Of course, in December, we are moving a bit, but not far. Starting in a studio for one night, moving to a 2 bedroom for 5 nights and to a 1 bedroom for the last 5 nights. These are all linked, and we have asked for a lock off for the 2 bedroom portion, so we shouldn't have to move except for maybe after the studio night.

We did our first DVC trip sun-thurs....the catch being that we flew in early on Sunday and out very, very late on Friday. I felt like we got alomst 2 extra days on our 5 night stay. I was suprised, but it was actually nice to be able to unpack and rest before going back to work on Monday. We'll probably go this route whenever it is just me and DH to conserve points for the big family vacations.

This is almost the exact discussion DH and I had last night. I can see his conversion to Disney fanatic is almost complete. When we first purchased our points (less than six months ago) we arrived at our necessary point figure by calculating the amount of points it would take to support our prior (non-DVC ownership) Disney vacation habit. Our past vacation habit was one 7 or 8 night stay in a 2bdr in December. At the time of our purchase, we planned on using points for all of the nights.

However, since becoming DVC members and finding this board, we discovered that we could purchase our APs at such a great rate. Therefore we would just adjust next year’s trip back one week and get two trips with our passes. Less than one month after purchasing our AP vouchers, DH says that if we pay cash for our weekend nights and only use points for our weeknights, we can go twice and get “more use” from our APs. Can anyone spot the circular logic and upcoming case of add-onitis for DH? :rolleyes1

So, I guess my answer to the original post is that we had good intentions to use points for weekends, but were led down the path of temptation by the cheap weeknight points and the discounted APs.

Well, for starters, there's no law that says I have to use my DVC the same way you do, now is there? I actually find that I have excellent access to top quality properties Sunday through Thursday, as well as Friday and Saturday nights.

Then, there's also no law that says I have to limit my visits to WDW to DVC properties, or that I have to use DVC points to stay at non-DVC resorts. So if I choose to occasionally visit the Animal Kingdom Lodge, why should I be bound by your opinion of correct DVC usage??

Why don't you just do your thing and I'll do mine, and then we'll both be happy..... :rotfl:

Nope-your a refugee if you stay at AKL on the weekend. :rotfl2:

We actually have driven from Minnesota-left on Friday after work and arrived Sunday, stayed at BWV for 5 nights, checked out Friday and drove back arriving Sunday. I have to believe there are a lot of refugees...I mean members that drive on the weekends and stay for 5 nights (hopefully closer than MN though).

Another thing is accomodations. Staying 5 nights in a 1BR (or 2BR) and then POP on the weekend may be considered "Less refugee-like" :boat: than a studio for 7 nights.

We purchased enough points so we don't have to do this "refugee" thing. What's the point of investing in a program that is supposed to give you access to top quality properties, if you can't "afford' a weekend stay?!? ;)

Not sure if this is an insult or not?? But, I say, to each his own and if people like to spread it out then go for it!! As long as we are all at Disney who c :thumbsup2 ares??

Next year we have a $277 cash rate (DVC discount) on an OKW 1B for a Saturday night. That same night would cost 48 points. For most members, that's over $200 in dues alone.

Personally, I don't see the value in spending $4000+ for those 48 points just so that I can "save" about $100 per year.

This May we are spending Sun - Thur @ VWL, Fri - Sat cash @ VB (with DVC 25% discount - $169 a night) and then Sun - Fri @BCV. We will be renting a car for the Vero Beach weekend and hopefully this trip will be smooth sailing. Avoiding points for weekends means we can stay longer and the DVC cash discount is an added bonus. :cheer2:

Well, every other year, we do Universal for Fri/sat, and DVC for Sun-Thur nights. We have 200 points, need to book a 2BR (6 of us), so this works. On the alternate years we can do 6 nights at DVC with our points, resort, and season.

When the kids were little (we have 4), we did not move around, we only came to WDW every other year or so. Now they are teens, so its not so bad to switch hotels.

Nice use of points, sounds awesome. Can you say "season pass" for $100 off. :thumbsup2

I cant imagine anything more logical than this thought process if you enjoy US and FOTL anyway like many of us, but only need a couple days there. :teacher:
