Using points at other "Non DVC" on-site resorts?

Interested in purchasing and had a specific question. If I owned DVC would I be able to use my points to stay at a non-DVC on site resort such as Port Orleans. We have family that always stay there and would like to be with them sometimes. If I can use my points there how do I find out how many points I would need?

However, if you purchase a DVC contract via resale you would not be able to use those points for the Disney Collection (Disney Cruise Line, other non-DVC Disney resorts, Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection). You could only use resale points (purchased after March 20, 2011) for DVC Resorts, World Passport Collection (RCI) and Club Intrawest exchanges.

All purchases made directly thru DVC still maintain all options mentioned above. As already noted, there is a $95 service fee for most of the non-DVC of the options.

And even if you could use DVC points to stay at Port Orleans, the COST of doing so would be very high relative to the value received. That's a really POOR use of points.

DVC -- like all timeshares -- yields its best value when used within the DVC system itself.

A good option, if you buy enough points, may be to rent enough points to the extended family to stay at OKW. Assuming they are a family of 4, OKW studios have 2 queen beds and a kitchenette, so it is pretty comparable to a standard hotel room. Unless they are a family of 5, then they'd need a one bedroom.

The other option is to rent out your own points and use the money to pay for a cash reservation at POR with your extended family. You'll come out much better financially doing things this way.

And also don't forget that while total point requirements at a DVC resort can never increase, such is not true for the Disney Collection.

Plus, if you decide to cancel that reservation at POR and book a DVC resort, you won't be able to use the points from the cancelled reservation. The points used for that reservation became Reservation Points and cannot be used for DVC stays.

the best option (both dollar and aggravation standpoint) is to buy less DVC points and pay cash for moderates. Assuming DVC works for you otherwise.
