We are taking a huge family trip (5 families) and getting a grand villa and a 2BR at Resort removed.

I have points to cover 2/3 of the trip, but not sure the best way to do this.

Option 1 - Use our points for the GV and rent points for the 2 BR. This seems a very clean way to do it. However, I'm staying in the 2BR, so I don't know how I'll be impacted by staying in the room not on my points. Also, not sure how to link the two reservations to make a room request that they are located together.

Option 2 - Use our points for the first 5 nights of both rooms and rent the points for the # removed nights.

I would have to link all the reservations together. Is that possible with this option? I can make our room request, though because we all check in on the same reservation. I'm pretty sure we don't have to switch rooms in doing this, and I don't want our dining plan affected either.

In your opinion, which should we do?

# 1 or 2 work, book both in your name with all other guest. Ask MS to link and request to be as close as possiable. Let them know it is a family thing and they try harded to keep you close.

I would do option 1. Linking 2 reservations does not always gaurantee that you will not have to move rooms. There is no difference if you don't saty in the room that are not your points. The reservation is in your name so all the same benefits would apply.

Another option is to have sufficient points transferred into your account instead of renting.

Then you have enough to cover everything without the complications, and you have full control of both reservations. Easier and safer for both you and the person you get the points from.

This would be my first choice.

This is what I would do. We have done this in the past as well.

I would also have the points transferred into my account we did this a few years ago for my parents 50th anniversary when we needed more points

If you do a transfer, just remember that you need to get them from an owner at the resort where you're staying. Transferred points retain their characteristics and you're going to need the 11-month window to get that GV.

When I just made a mid November reservation inside of 7 months, I was able to find availability at the following GV's. (We were looking for 7-8 days).

AKV Kidani GV 11/11-11/20
AKV Jambo GV 11/12-11/20
OKW GV 11/12-11/19
BWV GV 11/13-11/19
SSR GV 11/11-11/20

The only resort without GV availability for the week was BLT. In all honesty, the availability of the GV's was far better than the 2 BR's. We could not get a 2 BR for all the nights at AKV or BWV, but could get all or most in a GV.

I am sure it's easier to deal with points at the same resort, so I'm certainly not arguing with your point; just found it interesting that there was so much GV availability within 7 months. Fluke? Could be...!

By the way, I have read the same warnings about the Treehouses, "You have to book them at 11 months". I have called a few times to change around our reservation, and at least 3 times the MS rep has informed me that there were Treehouses available (for the 2nd part of our trip, from 11/15-11/20). So maybe I'm just experiencing some beginners luck....

To the OP, good luck and please heed Jim's advice on transferring from the resort you'd be staying at; my experience was probably unique and the 11 month window is going to be the only way to assure you get what you want.

Thanks everyone. I found out that there is next to no availability at the resort we want. So, we are simply switching to another resort and this eliminates most of the problems anyway.
I had read once that the first week of December was popular with DVC members because of the low points. I am experiencing first hand how popular it really is... there are only three resorts left that can accomodate our requests!

Points transfer is easier for all and for booking.
