Using Miles on Virgin Flights

We are using my miles to book our flights for our forthcoming trip in Feb 2009 but DH also has around 10000miles. Does anyone know what we could use these for on our flight. I know that when we flew with virgin last year (pre flying club days) the hostesses were announcing that miles could be used for upgrades and things but we took little notice as we were not members at the time.

What can the miles be used for and how many miles would we need to be able to do anything?

Feb is usually a well discounted month without using miles, Just looked and full fares are from around £396. The Miles and Money price is £348+2,000miles each So you will save at least £50 each. Other dates will save you more.
Other option is to keep saving them for an upgrade. For 20,000 miles you can get an upgrade to Prem Economy but you need to read t&c's as some upgrades are not allowed, only certain class tickets.

We have used 20,000 miles each to get a free flight(outbound) in August just paid tax of £101 each. then flying back with BMI for £235 incl. Total £336 each for Aug school hols, return with Virgin was around £700 each.

The offers are nowhere near as good this year to what they have been past 2 years, we have saved almost £5,000 using miles but fear we are not going to do as well in future, still have over 100,000 miles to use so will keep trying.

When I looked at booking a companion flight (free flight for 20,000 if another person flies full price) it worked out a stupid price this October. The person I spoke to checked all options and it was £100 cheaper to get 2 fares+miles flights on the same days due to the fact for this option you have to purchase a full price flight (quoted at £750 approx).
