Using iPad at the Resort

I have something similar from Apple. It's an Airport Express. It retails for $99. You set it up with an easy piece of software on a computer before you leave. I used it on our last trip and it worked great! Just ow that no matter what sort of wireless device you use, you'll have to pay the $9.95 daily fee for Internet.

I'd like to ask a little more about specifics when using the Airport Express. We use this device at home and there is a cord that runs from our cable modem to the Airport Express. Will there be a cord in our Wilderness Lodge room so that I can connect the two? I don't need to haul a cord as well, right?

I won't have to reconfigure the Airport Express at WL and then configure it back when we return home, right? Will my iPad and iTouch know how to log-in without a bunch of programming involved?

If we're staying for 4 nights, that would be $40 for internet connection. However, since my iPad2 is 3G capable then it would be cheaper to pay a 1 month fee of $25 than to pay the resort for just 4 nights.

The Airport Express won't work on the Disney Dream, right?

Another question can anyone tell me roughly how much data they use during their trips?? I know it can varry but I'm thinking if I get a package I have no idea how much we even use???

The room should have an ethernet cable to plug into the AirPort Express. If not, call the front desk and ask for one.

No configuration required. All of the information should be saved onto the AirPort Express. The same SSID (network name) you use at home should be available at Disney.

As another poster mentioned - no heavy log-in required. Just be sure you open safari FIRST and enter the information they require to authorize the charge for the internet.

If you have the iPad 3G, then it would definitely be cheaper to just pay for the month of data than to pay Disney's $10 fee.

It will not work on the Dream. Wireless internet is, I believe, available throughout the ship - but it's REALLY pricey.

For the other poster who asked about data - I would probably splurge and get the 2G package instead of the 200M. It's only $10 more and you won't have to worry so much about data caps.

Hope that helps! :)

Can you tell me more about how to go about buying this? Can it be done if your coming to Florida from Canada ?

First thing is to check to make sure you have an 3G iPad ( look on the back if you see a black bar on the top in the middle - it's a 3G model)
then you would set up a non contractual plan with either Bell, Rogers or Telus it's probably going to be like the American verisons selling 2G monthly. You can turn the 3G on and off at your leisure.

Living with a techie DH works with this stuff so I hear it all day long Statistics show no one really uses no more than 2gigs a month - unless you are going to stream movies all day long so you should be fine with the monthly allotment

I agree, most won't use the 2gb's . I'm a rare exception, I upload photos to my website and routinely go over 2gb's .

I stream alot of audio/video and use my hotspot quite often each month. This is my data usage last month (typical usage each month):

3G Data
39,489KB

4G Data
163,254KB

1MB = 1,024KB

1GB = 1,024MB or 1,048,576KB

I also use the EVO's hotspot. Wish I knew how to root it, that $29.99 charge is a bit hard to swallow.

We also used the Evo's hotspot, but it was so slow. We found it unusable when we were at Coronado Springs. :confused3

It took forever to get any pages loaded on our tethered laptop.

My husband had tried it out at home in a remote location and we didn't have any issues, so we were not sure why we couldn't get it to work there. Any insight as to why would be great!

Has anybody tried these Rob wifi thing-ma-jigs I see advertised all over the web? Are they legal?

They claim to be able to crack passwords of secured networks. Devices like these are used to 'steal' an internet connection that someone else is paying for, or to hack into a network for the purpose of stealing data.

Whether they're legal in the sense that you'd be arrested if you're caught with one, I can't say. I'm sure that Disney would be highly displeased with anyone they caught trying to hack into any of their secured networks.

I'm a real newbie when it comes to this stuff, so pardon my ignorance, but will I be able to read by boooks on my IPad while I'm in WDW? :confused3 I've got IBooks and a Kindle.

If you have downloaded them to your iPad, then yes you can read them on vacation. Internet connection isn't necessary if they are already downloaded.

Great! Thanks for the fast reply:thumbsup2

If your Kindle has 3G you will be able to connect with that as well. I've had okay signal to load purchased at Disney resorts.

Doing it from your iPad you are ordering from you Canadian provider be it Telus, Bell, Rogers etc. You can use your 3G iPad in the States but when on 3G service you will run into horrendous roaming charges without also getting a US data plan which will cost up front and then you are also charged about $1 per mb depending on plan. Not worth it in my opinion.

By the way the opposite is true for Americans coming to Canada. They get hit with the roaming charges here. Don't understand why these occur since it really doesn't cost extra per mb for them to provide the coverage. Just a money grab in my opinion.
