Using GIMP

Hi all! My wife has been wanting to scrapbook for a while now and I've convinced her to try GIMP for digital scrapbooking. I use GIMP currently for photo editing and love it but trying to actually "paint" or make shapes in the program is not very easy. I was hoping some of you could recommend either a good "paint" program or better ways to GIMP so she, and I for other things, could make shapes and such.
