Using FL resident rates, when I live elsewhere

Just for the record, I am NOT looking to get any FL resident discounts...like i said in my OP. I am an agent, as well as an AP holder, so don't need them, nor would I even try anyway.....due to the fact that I am not a FL resident, plain and simple. Never entertained the idea.

BUT, I have a friend that has a FL resident friend trying to convince her it is so easy to do and she can just do it. I needed all the information I could get to prove to her that she shouldn't even try! I knew she couldn't, but she seemed more interested in her other friends advice.

CPM- When I posted a few weeks ago, I was led to believe I couldn't get the Florida rate. After checking on my own, and looking at a few posts after, I did see I could get a "Florida ID. That's all.
I added the other part, because AMickeyFan sounded as if she was unhappy with the tourists at times. I, myself, would be happy, for the reason stated in my first post.

You say that now that you aren't living here, just wait. When you see the difference you will understand where I am coming from.

I moved here 14 years ago, and as CPM said, it wasn't the way it is now. I moved here from NY. I was 20-25 minutes outside of Manhattan. That is tourist too, but way different from here. In NY everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere, down here people go 40 in the fast lane on I-75 & 4 with huge RV's and you cannot get around them. There are others that have no clue as to where they are driving to, change lanes last minute no blinkers, making lefts from right hand lanes, running stop signs & red lights ... once you have lived here a year, let me know if you are still thankful...and by the way, NY has a state income tax & it is a tourism state....

OK,I Have to respond before this thread is closed to.

You know it truly blows my mind that you complain about US tourist coming down to Florida for vacation. It was YOUR choice to move there. If you truly hate the tourist that bad,I dont know where you could live to avoid that  ..I hate to hear that you are the ones that keep Disney open and you are the ones that have to put up with us.I go down about 5 times a year for a week at a time.I am sure I SPEND just as much as you do.You know what else blows my mind is that you guys jumped all over the glitch they had not long ago and you were trying to book 5 and 6 vacations for near nothing.Do you not think that would hurt YOU in the long run.

Some peolpe were just asking, instead of freaking out and thinking that people are going to dip into your benefits, because you know they cant.So why bther getting yourself all worked up.Let them book it and when they arrive let them be asked to show their DL and it will all be over. They will have to pay rack rate.It is as simple as that.

OK,I am almost finished.I LIVE in NC and I put up with probably as much if not more than you do with tourist, but I choose to stay here in Western NC so I cannot complain,it is my choice. We put up with people coming up here to escape the heat we put up with people looking at the leaves and people that dont live here cannot drive here.It drives me crazy but I just suck it up.

OK,I am stepping off the soapbox now.

Christine,

Tourism does not account for the largest industry in FLorida.

Agriculture is worth $67 Billion. Tourism is worth $47 Billion. Military spending is about $30 billion. High tech is worth about $10 Billion, and growing rapidly.

In all honesty, without tourism we'd have higher taxes, but not income taxes. They would simply raise property taxes. This way they could collect taxes from all the p/t residents who don't actually work in the State, but use emergency services, roadways, and such. The model works well to distribute the cost of government fairly to everyone, rather than forcing those who actually are employed in the state to subsidize those who simply vacation
here.

And BTW--I just stay away from the "tourist areas" as much as possible. I had the common sense to buy a house "too far away" from WDW to have tourists in the area, and found a job that allows me to take back roads so I never have to even see a tourist, except every six weeks or so when I go to FL Mall to get my hair cut. And I make an 8:00am appointment so I'm leaving before ya'll show up LOL!

We have always been asked for our FL drivers license when checking in. If you don't have it they will charge you rack rate.

I'm a Native Floridian we have always had tourist and hurricanes, I have a love/hate relationship with both. :earboy2: If we didn't have the tourist we wouldn't have WDW, nice roads and lower taxes. If we didn't have the storms we wouldn't have the beautiful weather during the rest of the year.

While driving in some areas can be :scared1: I beleive this is true in most heavily populated areas. When you add people not familiar with the roadways and driving in faster traffic there will aways a problem.

I originaly posted to let the OP know while his/her friend my get away with making a room reservation using the Florida address on the other friends advise. It wouldn't be that easy or possable to check-in without the Florida resident being there and their names would have to be on the reservation.

It' not like booking an AP rate when the rates would come out, then after getting the rate they would purchace an AP.

Too All Non-Floridians I say, "COME ON DOWN"

When you check in, you aren't asked to show your drivers licence? No matter what hotel I have ever checked in, I was always asked to see a pic ID...resident or not, Disney or not...
I travel on business nationally, exclusively staying with Marriott and never once can I recall being asked to provide a form of ID. As a matter of fact, I was just in Nashville last week and checked in without it. Maybe it's just me, but I doubt it.

As far as Disney, when we lived in Florida, there are many times, in fact, most, where I had not been asked to provide my drivers license at check in using a Florida Resident discount. The only thing that I have ever been consistently asked to obviously provide at checkin, without fail, was a credit card. I'm sure that the Disney resorts do ask, from time to time, for proof of residency, and if you're busted on it, you pay big time. Living in NYC these days, when we travel to WDW, I have an annual passport and use the AP resort discounts.

In no way am I suggesting that someone should try to cheat the discount system, although, like everything in life, people do and are lucky to get away with it. IMO, if you travel a great distance to visit WDW and count on slipping by, and you are the unlucky dope to get your ID checked at checkin, then you deserve whatever upcharges or denial of accomidations that you receive.

So you think people can just up & move if they want?? I'm not retired here, my husband has a job that moved us here. I can't even get out of my developement and turn left sometimes during season. My kid's school busses take an extra 1/2 hour in season.
Please. It's not that nice here.
And, as for the OP ,we did give her the info and others seemed to defend it for some reason, even in PMs. There are posts all over message boards for people that want to "geting" on other people's rates. Using Entertainment card rates without having the card, using AAA without actually having it, AP rates without having the AP and so on. It's pretty pathetic to me.

I am a native...so there!

I also live at the beach which is a high tourist area. I love it here but also hate that most tourists feel that since they are on vacation they are entitled to everything their way. We do also see increased prices at the grocery store during season as well as restaurant clogging. We are offered discounts in the offseason simply because many hotels and restaurants in the area cannot sustain the business.

As far as the glitch - don't comment on everyone's actions...most people did not book 5 trips as you stated. In fact I have already been many times this year with three upcoming trips along with a Disney cruise...don't even get into what people spend - that is a non issue....and does not equate loyality.

And a big AMEN to Sharon!

If you aren't a Florida resident you don't get the discount. Simple.

First of all not all of us did choose competely to come here. My husband was transfered & had he not gone, he was going to be without a job. He put in for all the places in FL that had a Gannett owned newspaper & was chosen by the Ft Myers one. There was a massive layoff in NY that year. Had he not been a supervisor, he wouldn't have even been able to put in for the newspapers in FL, he would have been on unemployment. So don't tell me we all have a choice..also, some of us are born here (no I wasn't). You may spend as much in Disney as I do with your five trips, but you cannot tell me that you support Fl economy the way Floridians do.
This was not directed to anyone but the ones that are trying to get the FL rate when indeed they aren't residents. It wasn't meant for those who really have a valid address. And using your words.... OK,I am almost finished, please don't tell Floridians that you put up with as much tourism as we do, our state is 3 times the size of yours & there is tourism from the Pan Handle to the Keys...anyone living in between will have to deal with it at some point. This wasn't meant for an arguement, seems everything on this board turns to one at some point. Yes, us Floridians jumped all over that glitch, so what it was on the Florida Residents section of the Disney Web site, my question is & that is what sparked my post is why are/was (as far as the glitch goes) non residents booking what isn't meant for them. If there are quilty minds out there, it isn't my fault. I am a Floridian. I am not asking someone to give me feed back on what they think us Floridians should have to deal with, I am asking why non residents try to get something meant for other people... so if you aren't answering my question, don't respond to me. And maybe this thread should be closed.

:goodvibes Thank you :goodvibes :goodvibes I am really starting to think that the Florida Residents need a board of thier own. Seems we get jumped on if we dare say something that offends the tourist. We get slammed if we do, we get slammed if we don't. And as you said, some are natives.... my daughter is for one ;)
Not sure about where you are but we also have to wait many extra hours in the ER room in the winter, our hospitals run out of blood, our doctors office's book up & we can't get in.
And yes, just because they are on vacation, we are suppose to let them go infront of us. We become the second class citizen as far as some tourist are concerned (not all though).

I have a question....PURELY out of curiousity, AKA, (I'm being nosy :teeth:)

My cousin lives in Georgia, she has two kids and is divorced, her husband lives in Florida and the kids live with him June, July and August while school is out every year. I know he has an AP and takes the kid to Disney for a week, sometimes two while they are there -- is able to get them FL rates for them?

As long as they are minors he might be getting it. Disney may or may not ask for some sort of ID. The older they are (teens) the more likely Disney will ask for some sort of ID on them. If they are all young, he would have had no problem. He is a resident, he shows his ID & gets the kids tickets. If in the future he may want to be on the safe side & can (but shouldn't have to) bring the court papers as proof they are in his custody for the summer. Disney use to have the GA resident rates the same as FL's. I guess they stopped some of it. By the way, you aren't nosy... you are curious ;)

In a case like yours (and we aren't saying you are trying to get something not meant for you, my post was directed towards those that are) I would have your friend call up Disney to see, if you are a TA, you must be aware of all that Disney offers, have her go onto the offical web site, all she would need to do is to put in her zip & it will come up. That way she can get all her info first hand from the mouse himself

I am also a native Floridian! I have lived here for my entire life. Not all of us have the choice to move here. My parents moved here long before Walt Disney World was ever thought of.

I agree 100% with AMickeyFan!! I live in South Florida. I live close to Fort Lauderdale. That is a major tourist destination. Not to mention the fact that the keys are a major draw for tourists. This isn't saying that other places around the county don't have to deal with tourists, but Florida is pretty much a tourist spot. From Jacksonville to Key West, Tampa to Fort Lauderdale we get tourists from all over the world visiting us.

I love the FL resident rates. Would go to Disney without them though, but they make me feel good to know that Disney values and recognizes the people that live here year round!! If I was to ever decide to move away I would still visit and not expect to get the same rates. It is just a fact of life. Some rates are only available to certain people. Just like alot of restaurants here offer senior citizen discounts.

Just wanted to add my .02 cents.

WOW! Kinda sounds like all the vacationers headed North in the summer in Michigan!
Actually, I understand where you coming from A Mickeyfan. I am one of those "winter snow birds" who has vacationed in Bonita Springs every winter for the last nine years. I too have seen the traffic increasing on US 41. Every winter when DH and I head down and see all those barricades on US 41 we laugh and say we should have bought Bob's barricades business. Bob does not even need a place to store his barricades he uses US 41 for his warehouse. :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl:
Sometimes you just have to see the humor in things and deal with it.
I am happy that you enjoy the perks that Disney and other parks give you and other Florida residents. Also I would like to thank you and all the other Florida residents for putting up with all of us "snow birds".

NC doesn't have a lot of codes, etc that deal with Disney...why should we have to pm?

If people would not butt their nose in with snarky posts - things would be great! You seem to enjoy doing that though - this isn't the first thread I have noticed with snarky comments from you.

and what does ridulous mean?
