I am thinking of giving a gift of a few nights to a friend that has just came home from Iraq, I know that there favorite Hotel is a non DVC hotel, can I use points for this stay? the Hotel is Pop Century. They really need to get away and unwind and spend some alone time.

You cannot use DVC points at the value hotels, just moderate and deluxe excluding those that have a DVC attached (Beach Club, Boardwalk, WL, AKL). On top of high point costs, you are also charged a $95 reservation fee. You would be better off giving them a studio at a DVC resort, even a 1 bedroom might be less points.

I am a new member and not yet in the system but how many points would say a moderate room require for 5 days? Does this type of reservation need to be made well in advance? I'm only thinking of this as a possibility for using points if there are no villas available for the time I want. Thanks!

Moderates: 17-24 for weekdays (standard), 31-42 for weekends; plus $95 fee :scared1:

I was able to get a room last year at POFQ about 3 weeks before (mid-October) when no DVC villas were available. This was before they started charging the fee.

Debbie, Thanks! I just read this caveat that probably won't help me much - "Most destinations within The Disney Collection must be made prior to 120 days before the end of the member's Use Year. The stay may occur right up until the end of the Use Year, but the reservation must be secured more than 120 days before the end of the Use year." Too bad they require this advanced booking! I will have 200 points once I close on my resale that will have to be used by 1/31 and thought this might be an option.

I agree plus they would get to stay in a deluxe accomodation as opposed to a value!

You have a February use year? I would be too late for non-DVC reservations. You could make a reservation for a stay 2/1 or after with 2009 points (or banked 2008).

The old "rule of four". You can't use DVC points to make reservation during the last four months of your UY in a non-DVC resort (you can stay in a non-DVC resort during this time, just make your reservation before four months out).

We used our points to stay at the Poly over Chistmas instead of using them at our home resort of AKV. Very pricey on points, but its where we wanted to be for this past trip.
