Has anyone done this ?, i have a Canadian Debit Visa card , and have a van booked with alamo (dec 4th) , I've called them and they have reassured me as long as i have funds to secure the rental and an additional deposit , plus the required identification (roundtrip flights, drivers licence, etc)I will be fine. But i'm still worried (don't have any credit cards). I'd even consider a cash rental.

Help! ;)

You should be fine as it also backed up by Visa. I think if it was a regular Debit card they might have a problem with it.

Did they warn you about how much the extra deposit would be? I think with visa debit cards it's a lot....
It can be done, we watched someone else using one of the US visa debit cards when we were down there last month.

There shouldn't be any issues - VISA Debit Cards are accepted anywhere in the United States that takes VISA. However, to facilitate everything and avoid any misunderstandings, you should indicate to the clerk that you want to run the card as "Credit". Despite the terminology, the funds will still be deducted from your chequing account.

As ash-n-brensmom said, it's quite a big amount. I believe some rental agencies place a debit hold on your account for the estimated charges plus 25%. While the hold is in effect, these funds will no longer be available for your use. As well, some rental agencies also need proof of roundtrip ticket. I don't know if Alamo does this or not.
