I see that others say you can stay at DVC using points but pay cash for weekends (with a DVC discount.)

What is the cash cost? Is it posted somewhere? What (if anything) is the DVC discount? Is THAT posted somewhere?

The DVC member discount is 25% off the rack rate - when it's available.

MS first priority is to provide villas using DVC points. When they know - either from past experience or from current reservations - that a villa won't be needed for points reservations, they can make the discount available for the discount. Weekends are usually the best opportunity for the discount. It is often not available right at 11 months - since they don't yet know what the need will be - but usually by 6 months prior the cash discount can be made available if demand has left villas available.

I think you can see the rack rates on the member site - but certainly thru CRO online.

I just booked Oct 5-12 2007 at BCV. I used the cash option for the weekend. (the first 2 days) and I used my points for the rest of the week. As you can see, I was just inside the 11 month window. I hope the CM didn't make a mistake. I do have a confirmation number though.
Good luck,
Tina

One other bit of info that I did not know until recently...when a cash discount is available it might only be for specific room types. We were looking for a cash discount on a 2BR for Saturday night and one was not available but a studio discounted room was. Member services said that a discount may be offered for the 2BR at a later date and she recommended that I keep checking back. So if a discount isn't available when you call, just keep trying because you never know if they will add one.

Good luck with your planning.

So how does one handle this? Make reservations with points and switch to cash if it becomes available, or just hope for the best while waiting/trying for cash booking(s)?

The difficulty is getting the 25% member discount. I have always had luck getting cash nights when I book early. If the discount is not availble you can book the cash night and keep trying back to see if the discount opens up.

I just did this as well for the first time. I booked a 2br Oct 3-9 at OKW and cash discount was available for the fri/sat nights. :goodvibes

Where can I find the cash prices for the rooms so I can see what a 25% discount will do?

Thanks -

Ellen

Some room types are not available with cash - Boardwalk view at BWV, 2 queen 2 bedroom at BCV.

I've combined points and cash at OKW 2 or 3 times for May with no problem. For a weekend night, a 1 bedroom cash price (w/member discount) comes to less than $7 per point when you divide the cash price by the number of points you would have used.

I used cash with a member discount for an OKW studio on a Friday night in September. By the time Florida taxes were added the price was higher than if I had rented/transferred points for that night. :confused3

I think it's a better deal on a 1 bedroom. From a studio to 1 bedroom it is twice the points but the cash price is not twice. As I recall, it was about $320 with tax vs 48 points (May 2005).
