Using banked points on a reservation-not always first.

Did I misunderstand? I thought that Member Services always used banked points first, then went to what you'd checked. So when booking a vacation at a non-home resort, I knew I had banked points at BCV, but I was afraid that if I checked the box to use points from there, that if they needed more points than what were banked, they'd continue using that contract, so I checked off my OKW contract. But I thought they'd use banked points first, regardless, then go to what I'd checked. Today I learned that that's not true. When I went in for some other purpose, I saw that all my banked points (as wells my reservation) were still there. I chatted with a CM,who informed me that the policy is to take points only from the contract you checked. Is that a change in policy? Or has it always been that way and I misunderstood?

If I checked the BCV contract, where my banked points are, they would take all the banked points. Just what I wanted! But after that is where my concern comes in. I had a total of 200 points in that BCV contract, 75 were banked and 125 were regular. The reservation I was making at 7 months needed 105 points. Would they continue taking 30 more points from BCV to fulfill the current reservation or would they then move to the OKW points for those, assuming, of course, that I've selected the OKW contract also? I would hope they'd move to OKW and not take those last 30 from BCV since I need those 30 BCV points for the 11 month advantage on another vacation.

So what you should do. Modify the reservation. Select OKW as the 1st contract and then Beach Club as second. It will take the banked from BCV first and then the rest from OKW.

The order of the contract you select really only affects the current use years points unless you have a lot of banked/borrowed/transferred points in both.

If you select OKW first and then BCV they will take holding, banked, borrowed and transferred points from both contracts first. After there are none of those left it would go onto the current allocated points so you would have used 75 BCV that were banked and the rest OKW.

If you Have BCV first and OKW second it will use BCV Banked and then allocated before using the current OKW points.

Believe my best answer is both contracts get checked in order of use. (Don’t worry about which resort the banked are in). The system will grab the banked first. Then to fill reservation, pull from order of current UY points checked. (System won’t auto take banked points if contract is not checked).

Fortunately a CM corrected my mistake this time. But in the future, if I check OKW first and BCV second, will the system take my banked points from what I checked second (BCV) then go back and take the rest of the points from OKW?

Yes, it scans all contracts selected for banked/borrowed from 1st choice to last , then scans for regular points from 1st choice to last

As others said, it is not a change. I made the same mistake myself in the past, forgot that I had to check the contracts with banked points as well as the ones I wanted to use up first in the current UY.

It's pretty easy though, take this for an example. I had this point breakdown before I made a reservation at BCV:
  • BLT Full points, 67 banked (Direct)
  • BRV Full points, 150 banked (Resale)
  • SSR Full points, None banked (Resale)
  • VGF Full points, None Banked (Direct)
I made a BCV reservation and this is order I wanted to use the contracts to conserve my best direct points, while still using up all the banked points first:
  • BRV banked, BLT banked, SSR, BRV, BLT, VGF
As @Tatebeck said above, the solution is easy, I just checked all four contracts in this order (SSR, BRV, BLT, VGF). The banked points get taken first, in the order reflected above.

The online reservation system's methodology has always been that: (a) regardless of listed order of the contracts designated for a reservation, all banked and borrowed points will be used before any current use year points; (b) as to using current use year points that is always done in the order the contracts listed, e.g., all current use year points in the first contract listed will be used before any current use year points are used in the second contract listed, and (c) if the contract is not listed as one to be used when doing the reservation, no points will be used from it.

Thus if you have an OKW contract with current use year points and a BCV contract with both current and banked points, and are making a reservation during the 7-month window, your listing the OKW contract first and the BCV contract second will result in the system using all the banked BCV points first and then OKW current use year points second, and will then use the BCV current use year points if, and only if, some are still needed to complete the reservation.

If you want to do the reservation differently, e.g., for some reason not use banked points first, or use some but not all current use year points in a contract and also use some current use year points from another contract, you would need to contact MS to make the reservation.

Thanks! Thats just what I wanted, but wasn't sure how to do it.
