My waterbed is leaking so Ineed to replace it. I do have a nice cherry bedroom outfit I inherited from my mom about 5 months ago. I have not bought a mattress for it ( hers was in bad shape) because after sleeping on a water bed for 21 years i want to make sure i get something that is comfortable. Sometimes when I stay at a hotel i get extremely warm sleeping on a regular mattress, so wanted to take my time.

Still not ready to purchase a mattress set( lots of $$$$) so was contemplating getting an air bed to use inside my waterbed until I decide. Read some reviews and seems like Coleman or Ozark Trails are good ones for the price.

Anyone use an air bed as their regular mattress and what kind do you have. Also if you don't have the double go you use it on box springs. TIA

We replaced our waterbed mattress with an air mattress about 2 years ago. We love it. It is so easy to change the sheets. The water mattress was inside a zipped cover so we just took out the old mattress and replaced it with the air mattress. You just adjust it by letting out a little air or adding more. The only thing you can't do is adjust sides(unless they make them like that now). I ordered it on ebay.

I slept on a coleman double high flocked queen for about 10 days... it was comfy, but no way I'd do it for long term.

I use an air mattress because I can not and do not like sleeping on regular mattresses. I bought an Ozark for 75 dollars, and it is a double queen, this means it is a double thick queen. It is insanely comfortable, and all I have to do is blow it up every once in a while. :cloud9:

I can do it camping, but I wouldn't want to do it long term. I think I would just buy a cheapo mattress from one of those mobile home furniture outlets to use while I decide on something better.

My husband often says he sleeps better on our air mattress while camping than our mattress at home. I keep forgetting to look into a better quality air mattress to try out full time. He has horrible sleep problems that seem to have gotten a little better since replacing our traditional mattress but I think he would still like an air bed.

I went from a water bed to a foam bed, that was hot!!, air beds have dips and divits that bother my ankles and feet and it was uncomfortable hot, too! I went back to a waterbed. But then when I had to move, I wound up with a medium firm pillow top bed. It isn't as cool as the water bed but for now it does well.

My college kid had to do it for the summer. Even in a healthy young person it caused back pain after about a week.

I don't mind an air mattress when I'm alone but if I'm sleeping with someone else (my husband) the air mattresses move too much and I can't sleep. We have a Coleman queen. We used it when we moved to our house and our furniture didn't arrive for 10 days. Not something I want to do again.

DD and I each had one over the summer while living at home (we'd left our furniture at the rental where I attend grad school). It was adequate, nothing more. By the end of summer, we were both OVER it. When DH came home and we both slept on it, it was pretty awful. Every time he shifted, I was jostled all over the place. In fact, DH and I were just having a conversation about how next summer we were going to buy mattresses, we're not doing the air mattress thing again. For a night or two, it's not bad, but I definitely don't recommend it for long term use.

I don't think I could go more than a week on an air matress. I would have to put some sort of foam topper on it if I had to sleep on it for more than that and I still don't think I'd be comfortable enough.

I'm such a dork that I CONSTANTLY worry all night that the stupid thing is going to burst in the middle of the night!! I get absolutely no rest, none, because of this irrational fear that if I move it will pop! I'm not even 175 pounds but I've got this crazy idea that it's going to burst in the night. :scared1:

And the truth is, I'm not even sure what's going to happen! Would it just quietly deflate? Or, would it be like an episode of Chip and Dale and the mattress burst with such a loud pop and shoot me like a jet-propelled magic carpet across the room or what!

But whatever my psychey thinks is going to happen, I can't rest worth a hoot on those things.

I personally can't handle the lack of airflow. Even the flocked ones are made of plastic and I always wake up feeling clammy. The last time I slept on one, it was during cold weather, and no matter which way I turned, the part of me touching the sheet next to the airbed was always cold due to the fact that my own body moisture was able to neither warm up against the plastic nor evaporate away.

When we moved we did not move our old waterbed mattress. At the new house we put an air mattress (I don't remember the brand but it came from a camping supply store) in the waterbed frame, thinking we would buy a new waterbed mattress. We never did. When after about two months of daily use the air mattress developed a slow leak, we bought a pillowtop mattress.

BTW, the beds at the Contemporary are just as comfortable as our bed at home.

When we moved from Chicago, we were in temporary housing for a bit. We lated about 8 days on the air mattress. I couldn't stand it - so off to Ikea for a clearance mattress for the next few months. I was much happier.

Our air mattress was an Aerobed - so it was around $125 originally.

We used to have one that sat on our futon for guests. One time my mom was visiting and it got a hole in it. It was a slow leak. She went to bed with a full mattress and woke up on the futon mattress with the air mattress on both sides of her. We tried to patch it but it didn't work. That's when we got the Coleman one that we have now.

I think the trick to air mattresses is to not over fill them. If there is too much air, the funny shape of the mattress causes it to be quite uncomfortable.

My DH and I sleep on one occasionally - FIL's, camping, in the living room with the boys, etc. We fill it about 85% full - just enough to be able to lay on it and roll around without your butt hitting the floor. At FIL and at home, we have an egg crate, a thick mattress pad and then sheets on top. It's great! (An over-inflated mattress with only sheets would be too hot and too uncomfortable.)

OP-I think I'd give it a try.

I slept on a queen size air mattress for about 3 months back in my twenties when I was living with roomates and didn't have any furniture of my own yet. It was an inexpensive one with the flocked material on the topside. I thought it was pretty comfortable, considering. Now you're making me miss the waterbed dh and I slept in for years. Sigh :sad1:.

DH and I slept on one for 7 months! We were doing construction and were out of the house.

I have a bad back and the air mattress was ok! First we had an Aero (busted within a week) then a coleman. $25 at Walmart. Can't eat it.

THis might be a great idea fro my son who needs a new bed. I am just not ready to make a BIG purchase right now.

Thanks!
