Using a 10-day pass on a long trip

Hello all! Long time lurker but I’ve loved and appreciated this board and all the great advice here for years.

I have a question about using a 10-day pass on a longer trip.

My mom and I are planning to take a 3 week trip in Fall of 2019 as a big splurge to celebrate her 65th! (As you can tell, we’re planning ahead).

We’re not planning on getting AP’s (doesn’t make sense financially since we are only going once that year) and it’s a bit pricey to get multiple ticket packages so we’re just getting a 10 day park hopper pass to use for the 21 days.

Our plan is to spend the first few days and last few days of the trip enjoying resorts, holiday parties, etc. We realize that you need to use the 10 day pass in 14 days so we’re planning to use it in the middle of our trip and bookend it with relaxation!

I seem to possibly remember reading somewhere that Disney automatically activates the 14 day window of your pass when you arrive for the stay linked to your account. Is that the case or am I able to wait a few days before using my first day pass and at that point the window begins?

1. An AP actually IS about the best ticket for USA guests who want to spend more than 14 days in parks at WDW.
2. Not really.
It has nothing to do with your resort stay.
It only starts counting the 14 days on the day you actually start USING your ticket.

And yes! Thanks for all you do with your excellent info threads. I believe I read conflicting info on the window opening when you first start your hotel visit from a planning book and it freaked me out so I wanted to confirm.

This may be in a thread somewhere but do you happen to know if there’s a maximum number of days you can stay in a Disney resort room before they’ll make you swap rooms/get a separate reservation? Is there a maximum if we rent DVC points?

If you're renting DVC points, you're going to be limited to the number of points the person you're renting from has. If s/he only has enough points for 5 days, then you're going to need a new reservation if you want to stay longer. Even if the person has lots of points, the DVC resort may or may not have rooms available for the length of stay you want

As for booking rooms from Disney directly, I've not heard of a limit. I can't see why they'd want to move you to another room, as it's more work for them to do a full clean to flip the room for the next guests than it is to do daily mousekeeping for you.

1. I've never heard of such a restriction. I'd think any number of vacation days "within reason"
could be arranged.
(I know that many guests park their campers and trailers at Ft. Wilderness
and LIVE there on rented Disney resort spaces for MONTHS at a time.)
2. That's a whole other kind of thing.

1. Jump to the "Resorts Forum" HERE, look around a bit and ask any questions.
(Yes, there's an entire forum just about the resorts.)

2. And... (you guessed it) there's a DVC Forum on the DIS... HERE.

Yeah I figured renting DVC points may be a bit of a stretch/pipe dream due to the length of my stay, though we’re planning to consider going through one of those more reputable point rental companies that have a lot of inventory. (And book like right 11 months in advance obviously). But we’ll see what I can find! Also considering a split stay.

And thanks again Robo for the thread directing! Sorry for getting a bit OT in this thread, just figured I’d ask all my random questions in one thread so I wouldn’t clog up the forums. Those info threads are helpful and I’m sure I’ve tried searching and reading a few times but sometimes finding the answer to one specific question is like finding a needle in the hay stack! There is a limit - after a certain number of days you become a tenant, and there are laws that cover the tenant that a hotel guest does not have.

Not sure if it's accurate, but someone posted in a recent thread that the limit is 29 days, because you start to have something akin to squatter's rights at 30 days. It would be interesting to know. I sure wouldn't mind moving into Disney for the long haul. There was a thread many years ago where someone priced out living in the Poly for a year. Very tempting!

You might want to at least price out one of you getting an AP -- you get dining discounts and shopping discounts and the memory maker. So it could possibly make sense for one of you to get the AP. It is a numbers game but sometimes it can make sense. especially the savings for that long of a trip.

Since your Canadian, there may be some ticket-only Canadian resident discounts for your trip. A google search indicates a current offer of 20% off of 4-day to 10-day tickets, but it expires on 12/31/2018. There may or may not be another offer in 2019.

Fellow Canadian here.

IMO, even with the horrid exchange, it’s best to get an AP.

We stay usually 12/13 nights and we upgrade to an AP the majority of the time. Food and merch discounts quite often make it a break even. If I was going for 3 weeks you bet your sweet butt I’ll be AP-ing my way through the parks.

Take a spin through the Canadian Viistors Forum. Loads of helpful Canucks hanging around there.

While going through a reputable rental company is important, the DVC rental company does not own the shares. The rental store just acts as a middle man to facilitate an owner who wants to rent getting together with a customer. The company still needs to find an owner who will make the reservation you want; it's not a communal inventory.
