After two weeks in Florida and a week in South Texas and Mexico, I finally found some time to write a report of our time at Universal, June 6-10. I need a vacation from vacationing!

OK, our family of five arrived at the Royal Pacific at 10:00am, Sunday, June 6. The room was ready. There was no upgrade available: the resort was "booked up," said Ehu at the front desk. She fixed us up with a standard (two Queen beds) room with a view of the park overlooking the front of the hotel, Rm 2608 to be precise.

Check-in went VERY quickly and we had our FOTL key cards in short order. One of the staff punched our cards for our lanyards (bought at Family Dollar), but accidentally punched a couple of them through the magnetic strip. No problem. She made new cards immediately.

We deposited our suitcases in our room and after a quick look around the hotel, headed straight to Universal Studios.

Retrieving our advance purchase (Mastercard Buy 4-Get 5th one free) 5-day passes was a slight problem because I had forgotten to bring along the confirmation number. Rather than making the trek back to the hotel, I went to the ticket window and admitted to my blunder. The teller gave an understanding smile, looked up my information, gave me my number and I made the transaction easily at the e-Ticket kiosk.

Into the gate and off to our first ride! Our youngest -- 7-year-old son -- was given first choice. We all knew what it would be and he didn't disappoint us: Men in Black. MIB was a 5-minute wait, but that was a heck of a lot better than the poor souls in the 45-minute queue. We were immediately spoiled.

After that it was a series of Jaws, Earthquake, ROTM, turn around and ride them all again, ride them all again, ride them all again. It went like that all day.

We ate a late lunch at Finnegan's and rode some more until time for supper. The ET ride Express line at the entrance was simply a merged line with the regular queue, but it didn't matter because it was not crowded. Once inside the attraction, we took another Express line right to the front.

Woody Woodpecker's roller coaster was on our youngest daughter's agenda, so we did that a couple of times. We went to the Animal Planet Live! show and had lots of laughs. We kept riding one attraction after another until it was time for supper.

Our reservations at Emeril's Tchoup Chop for 8:30pm didn't quite meet our expectations. We arrived early, but still had to stand around until after 9:15pm, which was an interminably long wait for the youngsters.

The staff didn't seem to have a good handle on seating people. There were parties of two sitting in booths designed for six people. We finally settled for a booth for four with my chair sticking out into the aisle. At the prices we paid, I should have noted my dissatisfaction, but as we've all probably done, I let it ride because we were so tired and so hungry.

Once seated, the waitstaff closed the "service gap." They tended to our every need. The chef and cooks did a fine job as well. What did we eat? My wife had the "Banana Leaf Steamed Fish of the Day served with Steamed Rice, Sweet Onion-Chile Salsa and Sake-Soy Drizzles." I had the "Tchoup Chop Creative Clay Pot of the Day served with Steamed Rice." It was half a chicken. The kids had fried rice. No complaints from anyone.

After supper we went back to the room. We were worn out but happy. The Loew's First wine and nuts had not yet arrived, but came the next day. We would have left it on the table anyhow given how full and tired we were.

I won't bore you with the details of days 2-5. Sufficeth it to say that we hit IOA the second day and alternated parks until the 5th day. On Day 5 we did the "favorite" rides at USF in the morning and went to IOA in the afternoon for one last gasp.

Our late checkout went smoothly and we left with only one regret: That we couldn't stay longer.

Now we're home.

Thanks for sharing. What time is late check out??

Thanks for the great report. I really enjoyed reading it.....and I don't think anyone could bore us. We love details!

Thanks again!

I love all the little details! I probably post too many of them in my reports because I love to read every little detail in other people's trip reports. Well, it sounds like you had a fun and busy first day. Thanks for sharing!

Boy, oh boy themepark, you're probably gonna enjoy mine then (if I ever get to it!). I've been told I tend to ramble on in a conversation:hyper2: (even when I'm writing!)

It was a great report Flexan, makes me soooo want to go back again!

After looking at my post I realize I gave the impression that we checked out AFTER spending the day at the parks. In reality, for us it was a little past noon. We could have waited until 2:00pm, but we chose to do it earlier so we could spend all afternoon at IOA.

I might add that when we got back to the hotel that evening, it was raining heavily.:umbrella: We were soaked, but didn't really care. A few well-placed beach towels (which you don't need at the hotel because they have them available at the pool) allowed us to change in the van. It was hilarious!:rotfl: Fortunately, no one else came out to the parking lot in the downpour or they might have been accidentally mooned had a towel been poorly placed.

I wonder who else among us has had to change in the car/van . . . :wave2:

 Guess I'll be the first to step forward & 'fess up! Two years ago, Virginia Beach, four of us trying to change in a Dodge Stratus during a thunderstorm. It was a day trip to the beach from our hotel in Norfolk & we had no where else to change. No great surprise that we now rent oceanview condos directly on the beach!;)

I knew I wasn't the only one!

There couldn't be too many details for me either. If it's about an attraction or place I haven't tried or been to, then I get an idea if I (or my kids) might like it. If it's something I'm already familiar with, I get that nice "nostalgia" feeling!

(And I will think of your family every time we use those beach towels! :p )

snoozn

same here! you can never give me too many details. i am like a sponge. to prove my point, i am still on these boards getting excited at 11:40 at night waiting for midnight so i can check us in to southwest online. we leave for the airport in 5 hours. the kids are sleeping......i hope :( thanks for sharing your trip report. i'll be sure to write when we get back from RPR!!!!! :bounce:

Great report. My kids love USO but would rather return to (Grandma) the Rio Grand Valley and Mexico. How was it?

If it's not too much of a diversion from our USO topic, I'll gladly share my great trip to "The Valley."

First off, it's a shorter trip from our house to McAllen than it is from here to Orlando (528 mi vs 1081 mi). That makes it a desirable destination for me!

Anyway, we went to South Texas for our niece's wedding. They were married at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 23rd and Lark in McAllen. There was a huge reception at the Cimarron Country Club on South Shary Road in Mission.

We took the opportunity to go to the Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan del Valle in San Juan, TX, the beach at South Padre Island, and to Nuevo Progreso, south on TX 1015 just across the Rio Grande. (Motherfletcher: You're probably very familiar with all these locations, but for those who've never made the trip, they can check them out on a map.)

The Shrine is quite a place to witness the faith people have in their religion. Artifacts attesting to the curative powers of prayer are everywhere: crutches, clothing, pictures, letters, etc., adorn the walls and glass showcases. The crowd at the flowing fountain of holy water was incredible. People were filling up their plastic milk jugs to take home, but I had only an empty plastic container of trail mix. I hope it wasn't sacrilegious to fill it with holy water.

Leaning now to the secular side, Texas' "Spring Break Shrine" of South Padre Island was also beautiful. There was a cool easterly breeze blowing, the waves were capping moderately and the sand was warm, not hot, underfoot. We lunched at Sea Ranch Restaurant after a couple of hours at the beach. My wife's relatives thought it expensive, but having paid $148 for five people at Tchoup Chop, I didn't blink at the $116 bill for 7 people.

Our trips to Nuevo Progreso were cheaper on every account. Those 99¢ margaritas kept one and all happy while shopping for everything from sombreros to zapatos. And, of course, we had to stock up on tequila, which was sold at half the price of that found in Dallas liquor stores.

Peddling goods on the street is a way of life in Nuevo Progreso and bargaining is the accepted method of determining price. Get what you think is the best price, then turn around and start walking away. You'll be pleasantly surprised by a lower price offering. They're still probably realizing 10 times the manufacturing cost, but at least you'll feel like you've made a good deal.

The "adult males" in our group wanted to go to the bars over in Reynosa every night, but my wife kept me on a short leash. Nonetheless, I managed to have a superb time.

Oh, I polled my kids and they said they'd rather go back to Florida to visit Grandma, but they'd go back to McAllen . . . providing I stop at the Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, Fiesta Texas and Sea World in San Antonio, AND the new Schlitterbahn on South Padre.
Geez, they're spoiled. I can remember when I was happy to go to the old swimming hole.

You brought back lots of memories. We lived in Weslaco which is 8 miles from Progreso. We went there every Sunday. My dentist was there, we'd buy gas there, and half the guys that worked for me lived there. I can't beleive that I used to be able to eat the 25 cent tacos that they sell on the street. It would kill me today. I could eat peppers that were 10 times as hot as the sun. On Christmas we'd eat cabrito at Arturo's. It never seemed right eating kids for Christmas but my Momma sure got a kick out of it. A little bit south of town is Las Flores which can get crazy.
The church in San Juan is quite a tourist attraction. It was a big deal when it burnt down.
I used to work on South Padre. The locals used to say if the wind would stop all the Mexicans would fall down.
I loved the Reynosa nightlife and the bull fights.
My MIL lives near Harlingen and had never been out of the state, stayed in a hotel or flew on a plane until last July when we took her to PBH. She was impressed that it had running water. We took her into the park and she was simply awe struck. My FIL was a cowboy, not rodeo, but one of those guys that rode a horse and tended cattle. MIL did well on MIB because it wasn't her first time handling a weapon. USO sure freaked her out, she had never rode an escalator! She threw one hand back when we were on Jimmy Nuetron like she was riding a bull.
Imagine going to USO without any themeing background though. She'd never seen any of the movies. She did recognize Lucy.
Thanks for the memories, Flexan!
