User Year..chosen or assigned?

I searched this and could not find anything. I have even seen it discussed recently and cannot find it. When we buy in a couple weeks can we choose our user year or is it assigned to us? TIA

If you are purchasing new from Disney they most likely will have a certain use year(s) available. They will offer you what that is.

If you are adding on through Disney you may need to go on a waiting list to wait for points at a particular resort and to match your existing use year.

If you are buying resale then you choose the contract that is for sale according to resort, use year and number of points. There will be a wide variety.

Disney is usually selling a particular month and which month continuously changes every month to two. However, if you want a different month you can ask and they will likely consider selling it to you but it could affect what points you get. For example, very often they are selling a use year month that begins 4 to 5 months before date of sale, e.g, buy in October and they may be selling June use year, and when you buy you get the points from that contract year meaning those that would have been issued 4 to 5 months before the sale. Net result, you get points immediately at time of sale that you can use or bank and in 6 to 7 months you get your second allocation of points as the new use year begins. If instead you choose another month, e.g., buy in Ocotber but choose December use year, you might not get first allocation of points until the December immediately after the sale.

If you buy BWV, BCV, OKW or VWL directly from DVC, then you can choose your use year, but there may be a waitlist for some use years and not others. As noted by drusba, you may get the prior year's points to use if you choose a use year that begins later in the calendar year after your purchase date.

We would like to get a Dec use year as we will be mainly travelling late December to beginning of April for quite some time. The banking would work well for us if we got a Dec use year.
