sorry, people saying this and people saying that fingernails grow after death are two of my pet peeves.
Neither happen.

When you die, all of your cell functions stop. hence, hair stops growing, nails stop growing, you stop growing.

The reason that people believe otherwise, however, is very simple.

Your body is made of quite a bit of water. when you die, your body slowly loses the water and shrivels. Your bones, however, don't change size. Your skin shrinks closer to your bones.

So the parts of your body protruding through skin (hair and nails) have the skin drawn back around them, giving them the appearance of looking longer.
