Use year when purchasing direct

I’m currently thinking about purchasing a direct contract at either RIV or Poly.
I plan to do the purchase in March and the logic thing to do is to take a March use year and therefore match my existing AKV use year.
But now I’m wondering if it would be better to get a later use year (September for example) in order to get the 2024 points at a ‘discount’ with the prorated dues.
Managing two use years won’t be much of a problem for me but getting those extra points sounds like a sweet deal. Am I understanding all of that correctly or am I missing something about getting those points for the previous use year?

For me, 'logical' action would be to buy before March 1st to get the 2024 UY points and ask them to bank the points. You will then have one UY for both contracts.
I’m totally with you on that one but unfortunately buying before March is not possible for me as I’m an international owner and can only purchase when I’m in the US, which I will only be in March.

In a nutshell I think you got it.

I’m just not sure what is the earliest UY you can get for Poly that includes 2024’s points.

For Riviera, yes, the best thing would be to get a March UY (as long as you buy a few days before Feb ends) because you’d have matching UY and start with 2024’s points and have 2025’s points load Mar 1st.

No matter which Use Year you choose, you’ll only start paying dues from the calendar month you purchase. So with a March UY, you’d pay no more than one month of dues on 2024’s points.

Should this be $0 for 2024 dues and then prorated for the amount of days left in 2025 from the day of purchase?

Thst is correct. Dues when buying direct are based on calendar year so anyone buying in March 2025 will pay the exact same dues regardless of their UY.
Almost someone purchasing on March 1st will pay more in dues than someone that buys on March 31st as the dues for the current calendar year are prorated per day.

This is one advantage for those that have a December use year as they can buy points on November 17 and only have to pay for 45 days of dues and then have those new points banked.

I assumed that was implied in my post that someone purchasing the exact time in March 2025 pays the same dues.

The point was that UY plays no role in what dues are owed, it’s based on the date they draw up your contract.

From what I've read and discussed with members over the years some guides are more creative than others and there are ways to make both you and them happy without breaking any of the "official" rules. I think it's likely related to tenure with guides who have been with Disney for decades knowing how to make it work.

I'd perhaps talk to your guide about your "plans of visiting Miami" or another beacon of culture in FL a few days/weeks before you head north to party with Mickey in Orlando and how you would love to start the process and put your deposit down so you can just finish the process when you get there (and of course make it clear you really really want those prior UY points banked as part of the deal).

Also don't be shy about asking for another tour, get some pins, other gear, and of course your "legendary" $30k(+) backpack you should be entitled to.....

Hope it works out!

Master Yoda level advice right here….

Thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it.
I will try it and contact my guide, but I doubt it will work out as purchasing really only is possible while in the US as far as I’m aware.

Glad to help.

I don't think anything I was recommending conflicts with you being in the US to purchase. You are allowed to start a deal under one set of factors and ask for time to come up with the rest of your payment (or down payment). People do it all the time to lock in current promotions near the end of the promotion cycle and then see what happens when the next cycle of promotions hit to "double dip" and pick the promotion that is better.

Nothing is finalized until everything is written up and the signatures are on paper. With direct, the day you call your guide and put some money on the table via a credit card they load the points into your account (and will even bank them for you if they give you the PY points past the banking window). I've had my guide call me and say if I do make a call on something even if it's just the day before the UY rolls over he would try and get me the points to bank to help make the deal.

I also have a somewhat unique situation as a resident of Nevada where DVC requires hard signatures on paper and all documents for any timeshare purchase to be provided in paper so I get a whole tree mailed to me for each purchase, contract, or re-work. I've had the delta between initial payment and load of points to when I finalize everything take a few months on some of them.

So if you happen to be "visiting Miami" a few days/weeks before your Orlando trip you could start the process and finish it later......

Hope this extra info helps.

Do you get to choose any use year when buying direct? I am curious why DVC has the distribution is does for use years. There is a thread asking for ideal use years and Sept/Oct won yet those are the lowest amount of points so I assume this means you don't always have a choice. If Disney is driving the distribution, what is their logic for how it is distributed? I could make some guesses....

You can pick your use year but most first time purchasers don’t know that and Disney will push to go with one or another.

Sometimes you have to push back and then a supervisor will magically approve it.

If you are pursuing one of those lower sold point use years it might be better to buy resale first as then DVC will match your use year when adding on.

If you make it clear to your Guide that you need a particular UY or you can't buy, it will be approved. But most people will just end up buying what the Guide suggests.

That's partly because DVC News' audience is the very small slice of Extremely Online DVC owners---and among that group, Fall Frenzy is the ideal time to visit, in part because it is the hardest time to book, which makes Oct a good UY and Sept even better for walking into October.

The best UY is the one that fits your schedule, and ideally you will not usually be traveling in the three months prior to it. (The banking deadline is four months, but you can't bank points in holding, so you have to cancel at least a month before check-in to bank no matter what.) I am tied to a university calendar: I have a week off in late Feb/early March, and otherwise am able to travel from the second week of May through about the second or third week of August.

Plus, Fall is glorious here in the Midwest. I don't need to get out of dodge then. I DO need to get out of dodge when the winter is dragging. So, for me, the Fall months are not particularly likely times to visit vs. late Winter through Spring. So, for me, December and February both work pretty well. October cuts off half of summer. Summer is not my preferred time to be in Central Florida, but it is more likely than the middle of Fall, at least for the foreseeable future.

Ultimately, I suspect UY isn't that important in the long run, because everyone's travel patterns change over time.

No issues with anything you said....and like you said it is up to the individual what is best. Below is the thread I found where Oct won by a lot by then again only like 35 voters. The three months I least want to go to WDW is Jun-Aug so Sept was best.
