Use Year? What does it mean?

Pardon my ignorance as I am still reading and learning about DVC. But can someone tell me what they mean by a "Use Year" and what is the significance of purchasing at a specific month? I've heard people say that DVC doesn't have July open for x resort but has December open for same x resort.

Your use year is when you receive your allotment of points. Each year on the first of the month of your use year you get your points. It is important for banking deadlines. And if you normally travel at one time of the year, having your use year a month or twe earlier gives you the most flexiblity if you need to cancel.

Are you not able to make your 7 or 11-month reservation until you have those points in your 'account'? For instance, we normally vacation in December or January. So a September or October use year would be best for us?

Yes..... September would be a good use year for you.But you have to remember your vacation habits may change during the next 38 years. Use year is very over rated. 98% time it really doesn't matter what your use year is. It only comes into effect if you have to cancel your vacation.

You can make the reservation at anytime as long as the points are there when the time comes for your vacation.

You can make reservations as much as 11 months out if it is your home resort or as much as 7 months out at other resorts. You do not need to have the points in your account when you make the reservation.

September or October would be good for December trips because you can cancel if need be and have plenty of time to either use the points or be able to bank that year's points.

What is the timeframe for banking points before your use year is up? What is the reservation cancellation timeframe?

For a "September" use year................you can bank 100% of your points by Feb 28.................50% of your points by May 31..........and 25% of your pts by June 30th.
