How many of you out there have to keep borrowing points each year because your use year isn't ideal?

I'm looking at to purchase a contract with a use year of Aug, but I travel in March and July every year.
I would essentially have to be borrowing points each and every year to travel on those dates.

How many of you out there have to keep borrowing each because your use year isn't ideal?

Yes, I read that thread but just wanted to know how many people don't care about use year because they don't mind the hassle of borrowing every year.

But you do understand that if you book a stay for March 2018, you can do that in April 2017 with "current" pts from your August 2017 UY. You can also use borrowed 2018 UY pts if needed when you book in April 2017 - but you certainly don't have to.

UY has nothing to do with when you are able to book a stay.

UY has nothing to do with any points that we might borrow. If we borrow, it's because we've exhausted our allotment of points for the year.

I supppse I count NOT borrow this year and use them for March and July of 2018. That would prevent me from starting the borrowing cycle next year. Hmmm.

I supppse I could NOT borrow points this year and use them for March and July of 2018. That would prevent me from having to borrow next year and the year after that etc.

Does the contract you are looking at have any points available in it's Aug 2016 UY. If you purchase a stripped contract (no current UY points), then you would have to borrow if you want to make a reservation during the current UY.

No points in Aug 2016. That's the problem. This starts a cycle of borrowing since I want to book stays the same time each year. To prevent that cycle of borrowing, I need to wait until next year to use those points.

So I guess I'm renting points from someone this year :(

Borrowing all your points every year, in my opinion, is not a good habit to get into. One thing you have to remember is that borrowed points cannot be banked. So you book a 10 day vacation in July and you have to cut off one day. You will then end up losing those points. They are borrowed and they will expire Aug 1st. If you had a use year of Dec (I say this because it always seems as if there are Dec UY's for sale) your banking window would end July 31st. This way you could bank any current UY points from a canceled March or July trip.

What resort are you looking to buy?

So in other words, it's not the UY, it's the stripped contract that would cause you to borrow every year.

We're very often borrowed ahead, but UY has nothing to do with it! :cutie:

I agree w most of the posters above that UY has little to do w whether or not I'm borrowing. UY determines by what point in the year you'd want to have banked your points, and what time of year is ideal for travel -- but not your borrowing. That's determined by how many points you have. If you're consistently borrowing, you should just take a year off and you'll get caught up.

The correct use year is simply insurance if you need to cancel. If you never need to cancel, then use year is irrelevant.

I don't care about UY, but it's not because I mind borrowing. :)

Can you just shoot for another contract with points that you can use so you don't have to worry about this?

I'm purposely buying a stripped contract to see if that improves my chances with ROFR. I just had a contract taken from me.

You should not buy a stripped contract thinking that Disney will not take it. Nobody knows what Disney is going to take. Plenty of fully loaded contracts pass ROFR and plenty of stripped contracts get taken. Only Disney knows what they are looking for. Sometimes it is large contracts, sometimes small. They just let somebody pass on BLT for $105pp and took some other persons at $110pp twice. They have bought a fair amount of SSR recently. What do they want with SSR, seriously SSR. Only they know.

I am very sorry that Disney took your contract, but don't do yourself a disservice trying to buy a stripped contract thinking Disney will not take it. They literally might roll a dice on each of these contracts and a 1-4 passes and 5 and 6 get taken.

I borrow because we do lots of trips. We have two UY, June and August and our trips are mostly from Aug to Jan so both UY work fine. But we are constantly adding trips. I will say that I wish our points were ALL Aug UY. Hate having two UY.

I'm looking at a contract OKW now with a use year Oct with points for 2017, 2018, etc. If I don't use the points this year, I won't have to borrow next year. The contract Disney took from me was OKE Extended. The one i'm looking at now isn't extended. I'm wondering if it even makes sense buy a regular OKE contract since there is only 25 years left. I'm thinking of the future, grandkids I may want to take etc.

Again we are looking a large amount of points to accommodate the length of time we usually stay and the time of year.

I can understand where you're coming from with wanting a few more years out of the contract. You should do some research on old Key West extended before you go down that road. With half the resort expiring in 2042, maintenance fees could go up significantly. Unless you have your heart set on old Key West, Saratoga Springs expires in 54 and can be had for a similar price.

Just like what I said about Saratoga Springs, I have no idea why Disney would want to buy an old Key West resale unless it was a really great bargain. It kind of adds legitimacy to the whole rolling the dice theory.

Good luck on your next try.
