Use year/banking points ?

We have been researching resale and have some questions about UY and points.

1. We almost always visit WDW in late August/very early Sept. - I am a teacher and it is the least busy time that we can go. Because of that I've been looking for August UY because my points would come available in August, right? Like I'd get my 2010 points on August 1st, 2010, right? Or would we get our points for 2010 on January 1st, and there is no real need for me to only be looking at August UY.

2. Banking points. Let's say I had 160 2010 August UY banked. When do they have to be used by? Could I use them for a 2012 August trip?

If you have an Aug UY, that is when points become "current". So, on August 1st, 2010, the 2010 UY points became current and are valid for trips from August 1, 2010 until July 31st, 2011.

If you bank those points, they would now become part of the 2011 UY and be valid from August 1, 2011 through July 31, 2012. They would not still be available for trips in August 2012.

When you travel, the points eligible are based on the UY you are traveling. So, with an August UY and an August 2012 trip, that can be paid for with banked 2011 UY points, 2012 UY points, and borrowed 2013 UY points.

I do think that having an Aug UY is a good idea. Having one that falls just before your typical travel gives the most flexibility, IMO, if you have to change or cancel a trip.

We travel in the beginning to mid August (teacher) and have a June UY. It works out great because I know that I have a lot of flexibility in modifying my reservation right up until the 31 day mark since I traveling so early in my UY.

This is a point that confuses alot of new members. Once your account is setup, you can look online and you will see your current use year plus the 3 following. So there is never a case where you have to wait for points to become "available". I have an April use year and if I look at my account online, right now I see April 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013. As Sandi said, points used is based on the date of stay. So any date you could book now would have the necessary points in your account, even borrowing.

another question to go with that if u have oct UY 2010 pts banked and make a reservation for jan 2012 could u make the reservation in 2011 to still use the 2010 pts (best way i can phase it hope it makes sense)

A January 2012 reservation would be in your 2011 use year (10-1-11 to 9-30-12). So you could use banked 2010, current 2011, borrowed 2012. Everything is based on date of stay, not when you make the reservation. You can use those banked 2010 for a date of stay up to 9-30-12.
