We currently have an Oct UY at VGF and were looking to add on resale at BWV, mainly for our October F&W trips. I was thinking of an August/September UY for this contract for more flexibility, but saw someone mention that because the UY would be different, I couldn't combine points at 7mo between the two contracts without transferring points. Is this true and is it because of the different UY?

You would have to transfer points between the 2 UYs in most cases. They'll be two different memberships, if you will. Many people will have contracts under different UYs and manage just fine, but it does add an extra level of planning and organizing if you wish to use points from both for a single reservation. I also believe you can only transfer once per year, but we have not actually had a need to do that as ours are same UYs. Others here will fill you in on their actual experiences.

But I would not need to transfer between the contracts if they were both Oct UY because the memberships would be the same?

Being different memberships, you would need to transfer to use points together for a single trips. Or you have to book whole nights on each.

And, you can’t borrow points that are transferred so if you moved your, for example, Oct UY 2023 points to the Aug/Sept UY, those points would still not be good for Aug or September trips because they retain their own rules.

Points within the same membership can be used together at 7 months easily at the different resorts. Just remember though resale points can’t be used at RIV or future resorts even if you have direct points that can

We sold our second UY contracts (delayed closings this fall). It was IMO a royal pain. It is so much easier to have multiple contracts in one UY. It was more of a hassle than I expected - 26 year DVC member here!

Lots of members do have multiple UY's, just my take on it. Good luck!

We own at 3 resorts. Each has a unique UY, but all the contracts at each resort is the same UY. The "one transfer in/out per year" does not apply if you own both memberships. I pretty much use by BWV points only at BWV. I pretty much use my AKV only at AKV, or I will book individual nights with those points, I have never transferred into or out of either of those.

My SSR points get a little more complicated. I have 2 contracts (resale) with just my wife and I listed. I then have a small 25 pt (2017) contract that qualifies us for member benefits. 3 years ago, as my DD were moving out, we added them to that contract, so we all get benefits. This makes them a unique membership so I have transferred those every year. I usually wait till I am about to book a trip with my SSR points and then transfer them to the contract with just my wife and I on them. It has never been an issue.

Only if we wanted to pool all the points into one large set, say for an Aulani trip, would I need to transfer the others. As stated above, the alternative would be to book whole nights under each contract.

In general, if you expect to use the separate contracts for separate vacations, it is not an issue. It is when would plan to pool the points together for a single reservation that transfers are needed.

I am in closing stage with a resale contract at OKW with March use year. If I ever decide to add points at OKW do I need to ensure I keep the same use year to combine points for a single reservation? If I understand correctly I need February or March uy to keep March 11 month booking.

UY plays no role in the 11 month booking window. It just determines which points can be used for a trip.

For example,, everyone could book March 2023 in April 2022, regardless of UY owned. Someone with a March UY would have been able to book that trip using banked 2022, 2023, and borrow 2024 to complete the trip since it falls in the March 2023 UY.

Someone with an Aug UY, could book that same trip, the same day, but would be using banked 2021, 2022, and borrow 2023 to finish the trip because it falls in the Aug 2022 UY.

To book a single reservation without transferrin, all points need to be in the same membership…that means same UY with the same owners.

I may have worded my question incorrectly. Let’s say I add a June use year, when I book at my 11 month window am I allowed to book points off both March and June, for instance for an October reservation? Or would that require transferring points?

Thanks for your help!

Two different UY = two different memberships, which means it's as if you were two different people. To combine points for the same reservation would require calling MS to transfer points from one membership to the other membership, OR booking some nights with one membership, then waiting for the 11 month window to open to book the remaining nights with the other membership.

Different UY can be tricky - most members who have them use them separately, e.g. they might have a September UY that they use to book Food & Wine fall trips and a February UY that they use to book Spring Break visits.

Thank you! If we add on then I will definitely pursue same UY
