I am planning a fairly large add on later this year. We currently have a December UY. I've pretty much decided to add on at our home resort AKL, for use of grand villas in future. (And prices remain good here too)

So my question is - would you look for contracts that maintain the same UY month? Or what are opinions on benefits of a different UY?

Thanks!

If you're adding on at the same resort, and want to combine points between the two contracts regularly, then certainly get the same use year.

Two contracts with different use years are treated by Disney almost like different members. You would have to transfer points from one membership to the other to book, then both memberships would be ineligible for any other transfer in that year. You likely wouldn't be able to see the points in the account you transferred in, and would need to call ms to book.

Two different contracts with different UY might be a reasonable idea if you wanted to book reservations at different times of the year as solo resort stays. For example, a contract to book BWV for food and wine, and a different contract to book BLT for spring break.

But if your purpose of the add-on is to usually combine points for a single booking at the same home resort, I can't think of any reason you would want the two contracts to have different UY.

It depends on how many points you own now and how many you intend to buy as to how much importance I'd give to matching them up. All else being equal it'd be best they're the same in most cases assuming you will title them the same as well. However, if both are of sufficient size (say 200 or greater), I'd likely go for the best contract over having them the same UY. There are 2 situations where having them separate is a plus, if you plan to do transfers to/from others and if you have specific plans where a different UY is much better. If you know you want to add on and get the same UY, I'd start now because any delay will decrease your chances of getting Dec with current points, decrease the likelihood of using any points that will expire and decrease the chance that bankable points are banked.

Close to 30% of the points at AKV are in the Dec. UY so you shouldn't have too much difficulty in staying with that one.

I'd agree that if the contracts are on the larger side and you have a reason for a different UY such as 2 different times of the year that you normally travel or if you might want to transfer points on a fairly consistent basis then there can be a benefit to having 2 different UY's but in general it's far easier to just have one.

Make certain to get it titled exactly the same and also have your broker and title company note that you are an existing owner and the membership number in order to best assist DVC in getting the contract into your existing membership.
