Use Year advice

So I have read a bit and talked a bit to Disney and resellers re: UY.

Our last 15 trips to Disney have been between June-Dec. I'm a physical therapist in the school system so I have all the typical school times off so that is when we travel. Bad part it's usually the most busy and expensive time of the year but nothing I can do about that.

Anyway, I have gotten advice that we should try to get a June or April UY so that it covers the times we mostly go and the bank/cx date is far enough out so we don't miss on banking points. It kinda makes sense to me but a reseller said it doesn't really matter at all and don't base buying on the UY since our travel times are spread out over 6 mths.

I would love advice from some of u vets out there!? :) I'm all ears!

Thanks so much!

Jim

If you are up for a short tutorial, take a look at this thread -

June is probably ideal, yes.

but it's true that UY is only an issue if you need to cancel - you'd like to avoid traveling in the last few months of your UY.

(and remember that UY has nothing to do with when you call to book.)

You've got 2 choices. Get any UY and hope you never have to cancel a vacation or get a UY that lets you bank your points should you need to cancel.

Since 1996 we have had to cancel 3 times. Once due to a job relocation, once due to a death in the family, and once due to canceled time off from work. Fortunately for us we banked 2 of the vacations points, the 3rd we took a couple of months later.

My position is this, why not take advantage of a UY that gives you added flexibility, it doesn't cost you a thing.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have 2 listings im looking at right now in the June and April uy. We've going to sit down tonight to try and figure out of we should put in an offer. We would deff be happy with either. I'm psyched.

Jim, this is way off topic, but... I am also a PT. And I would love to land a job in a school system so I can be off when my kids are off. But here in MA, school system jobs are very hard to come by. Do you have any advice? I have tons of experience (17 years), but most of it is not in pediatrics. :goodvibes

If a reseller had an oct UY that had the resort and points you were looking for, of course they would say UY doesn't matter if they want to make the sale. While UY only matters IF you have to cancel, why take the risk when there are other contracts with UY that woul suit you better. We have a June UY as I work in a school as well.

Totally agree with this. It is nice knowing that if you have to cancel, you have time to use the points or bank them. However, if you find a contract that is perfect for you other than UY and a great deal, I would still consider it. We've taken two trips on points so far and had to drop a night from one of them. I'm not sure we could have used those points if we had not been able to bank them.

Same here in pa. I was lucky enough that I was fresh out of college and would work for much less than the other PTs put there and they took a chance on me vs having tons of experience. Pediatrics is one of those specialties that u got to learn in the field so that's why I think I got it. The other PTs could mold me. This is my 12 th year and I still learn each day.

It's tough the school system is very political. Very!

Sorry that didn't help prob.

This was pretty much my thought too but was second guessing myself! Thanks a lot!

Just like Disney doesn't tell direct buyers that all resorts are available for sale or that there are other UY's available. :sad2:

I will say they did tell me about use year. They r the ones who originally got me thinking about it in the first place. I'll give them that.

For a small contract it can make sense to have your use year be the last month of a two month period during which you usually travel, say August if you go in the middle of summer. This way, you can use up to four years of points if your travel dates cross the beginning of your use year (banking + borrowing + 2 UY worth of points).

True....but you risk losing a LOT of points if you need to cancel. Whatever catastrophic event that precipitates a late cancellation would be made even worse by losing 4 years of points.

Well you would still be able to keep the second half of the points in a holding account for a full year. And we're talking a small contract here. Even then it would often be possible to recover at least MF on the first half by renting last minute.
