Dean - I'm in my early 40s and having never missed going to WDW 1x or 2x a year since the early nineties. I've always stayed at All-Stars or Pop Century and occasionally something more expensive from time to time. Mainly because I'm at the parks from opening to closing I didn't want to waste money on something I was just using to sleep at. But as I've gotten older I want to take it easy and have more of a 'relaxing' vacation. In 2015 the MK was open from 7am to 3am and I tried to get my 11 DS to stay up the whole time but he conked out at 1am. He gave it a good try. I just stayed at the GF during the D23 convention and boy was I spoiled. So I'm ready (both financially and mentally) to stay at a deluxe resort and actually enjoy staying at the resort for a bit of time without going to the parks all day. I want to pick SSR because it's got a lot of availability and I could stay at other properties quite easily, (Poly specifically). My schedule is quite flexible, it's just the school schedule that gets in the way. So as long as I can buy SSR retail (25 pts or so) and add that onto a resale with the same UY I think I'm good. Any deluxe resort is fine with me. If I buy retail, can I dictate the UY?

Yes, which is why the easiest order is to buy the resale first so that you can look for the best contract in the couple of UY's that could work best for you. First, that's the only way you can get 25 points direct - if you are a current member adding on. Otherwise the minimum is anywhere from 50-100 pts. And second - they will just match up to your UY that you bought resale.

I am looking to add on. Was told they have to get points in the UY that I want, they can't just take any UY and make it the one that I want.

Also, if you add on to your UY you only have to buy 25 points. But if you add on on a different UY you have to buy 50 points.

Correct. Once a unit is assigned to a UY that is the one it stays an the points for that unit have that UY. If they don't have any points in the UY you need then you either need to wait until they do or you could purchase a new master contract in a different UY but they more or less consider that a "new" buyer which is why they have the 50 point minimum.

I think SSR is a good fit for this situation. You already know the limitations of location. BLT, AKV and BWV are the others that come to mind as cheaper but a major upgrade. This assumes you can plan close to 11 months ahead (7 at the latest) and are OK with the commitment and compromises of a timeshare.

AKV will feel similar in location to the values, SSR will also to a degree but is close to Disney Springs. BLT will be more up front but will be cheaper than all but SSR long term if projections hold but it's fees have passed SSR and if they go up enough, the realities could shift a little. I'd still expect the fees to be lower than most long term. OKW scares me at this point because of the transition around 2042.

If they don't have it they would be able to get it with a reasonable time in all likelihood. For SSR and Poly, I don't think this'll be an issue. I would not buy a different UY in this situation unless you want to use them completely separately.

BCV. They do have Feb UY but not March (which is what my contract is). Do you think that is a big deal?

Also, paying retail for 25 points is one thing, doing so for 50 would hurt.

Just get on a wait list or if they won't wait list for you, get with your guide to do it unofficially. Let them know you'll do 25 same UY but not 50.

Oh heck yeah wait! Certainly don't buy 25 points you don't want for several thousand dollars because the sales guy tells you they don't have the option in stock that would let you spend half as much... Get the UY you want to match what you have. Just waitlist, it'll come thru eventually.
