USAirways Still in Business in Sept?

I am ready to book my airfare for my September trip to WDW. I am leaving from Washington and USAirways has a terrific, nonstop schedule at a great price. I have flown USAirways many times and been pleased with them. I am aware, however, that they are experiencing financial difficulties and I do not want to buy tickets and then have them go under.

How likely is it that USAirways will still be in business in September?

The last I heard they were on track to be coming out of bankruptcy.

USAirways is in pretty good shape. Some of the airlines not too sure what is going to happen with them.

We've flown USAir before and had absolutely no problems with their service, except for the older planes they fly out of Pittsburgh, they were always our first choice.

However, we have quit using them, particularly because no travel insurance company I could locate will cover their flights anymore - a rather telling fact I think.

As far as insurance I am sure there are a few airlines that are in shakier shape that USAirways these days.

Travel Insurance will not cover airline cancellation for a company in bankruptcy when the insurance is purchased. United is also in bankruptcy. Not really a "telling fact" but a straight out rule.

I am confident that USAir will be still be flying this year. I have tix for several flights through early December. The airline business is vastly changing. USAir knows it has to operate much leaner financially if it wants to continue flying. I'm not sure, however, that some of the other "legacy carriers" have figured that out yet.

If an insurance company will not cover an airline's flights due to a "rule" or bankruptcy, me thinks there's a good/telling reason they have such a rule, i.e., the airline may not be around to complete the flight when it's time for you to board.

I don't think an insurance company has all the airline information when they make a decision about covering those flights.

I suggest visiting www.flyertalk.com for some opinions about USAirways.

Thanks, Safetymom, for the link. I have been doing some research on USAirways and it appears that they will still be in business for at least the remainder of the year. Their longterm survival, however, is not looking good.

Not if they keep selling 1.80 tickets. They had to honor a thousand of them because of a typo error.

USAirways is not the only airline that should be concerned for their future. Many of the airlines need to restructure how they do business.

Apparently there are talks of a merger between USAirways and America West.

I've flown AW once or twice, but it's been years ago. Any word on how stable the company is, and would this hurt or help USAirways?

There was a good article in yesterdays Wall Street Journal about it. IF the merger goes through, big IF, it appeared that it would benefit both airlines quite a bit.

Still quite a few obstacles though.

Either way it looks like they will around at least for this year.

I do believe USAirways will still be flying -in some form-through at least next year. The unexpected ultrahigh fuel prices will force many changes in the airline industry over the next year. Don't be surprised if USAir merges with America West or another airline in the coming months. Also, don't be surprised if other legacy carriers (UA, AA, NW, etc.) merge with other carriers.
