Look out world, the Yanks have learned how to play the beautiful game. The Americans have been fantastic in this world cup.
As a passionate Welsh football supporter I have never been able to see my country play in the tournament and I cannot bring myself to support England.
The US have played with pride, passion, and commitment, which should be an inspiration to any American kid who wants to play football.
The team has come into this tournament as underdogs and nobody thought they would get past the group stage. Not only did they qualify, but they did better than England.

USA, you should be proud of your football team, they have taken on the world and performed along side the best. Football is well and truly the 5th sport in the US.

Go Team USA.

I think it would go over better if the rest of the world didn't call it football or if they didn't bug us for calling it soccer. ;)

With that said, soccer/world football is really not my thing. On my list it's farther down than #5. I like to play it though! I'm a pretty good striker, enough to make it on my high school's very competitive varsity soccer team freshman year.

But for watching, snore. I find watching golf more entertaining. And I know a lot of people who feel this way. Why is that?

Couldn't just say thanks for the nice words and well wishes, could ya?:rotfl:

Thanks for the post Sapper, it's refreshing to read that! I'm reading the 606 (I think that's what it's called, on BBC sport), not everyone has your same frame of mind!;)

Thanks for the :thumbsup2!!! It was truly exciting watching them, even though they're done now, I think they really did a great job.

Lol, I didn't mean it to be something bad. I was just saying I've never been able to get into it. You know, how some people like grapes, some people like apples... some people like soccer, some people like bowling. KWIM?

And yes, Sapper, while it probably doesn't seem like it, I really do appreciate it. Sometimes, as an American, any time I go onto an international board, a lot of it is about how much the US sucks. It really is a nice relief when I hear someone not from the US being nice.

Lol, now that I think about what I'm typing, I might be digging myself a bigger hole. Country of origin, that I've noticed at least, hasn't been a factor in rudeness here on the DIS or those who I meet in person, I am strictly speaking of other non-DIS online, written, conversation.

Thank You!! We are very proud of our boys.

Thank you for the positive comments! I'm very proud of our team and how well they played.

I'll continue to watch the rest of the cup games. I hope England wins tomorrow!

I agree that the USA should be really proud of their team. Those guys played with spirit and passion and in all of the games they played they never gave up till the final whistle went! Not only that I loved the fact that they very rarely complained, and I never saw them playing up a tackle from the other team to try and get a free kick, true sportsmen :thumbsup2

We think team USA rocked too!!! Yesterday's game was a disappointment but someone in every game a team loses. They did well! U S A!!! Guys, didn't it make your heart swell when you hear the roaring singing of The Star Spangled Banner all the way over in South Africa!?

I know the rest of the world loves soccer but it is an un-American sport at its core. We like our sports to actually involve SCORING. That is why it will never become a dominant sport in the USA.

Also, based on this World Cup, it seems that corruption (and/or incompetence) in the refereeing corp runs rampant. But I guess that is what happens when third-world countries are involved.

Thanks for the nice post! :)

Did you know that soccer/football is the most popular sport in the country among youths? Yes, more children play soccer than football, basketball, or baseball. Just because it's not dominant in the bunch of overpaid professional leagues does NOT mean it is not dominant. As far as your ignorant scoring comment, maybe you should pay attention to more than one game, and see that routs such as 4-0, 5-0 do exist and happen frequently.

Well, besides being completely racist and offensive, you are also incorrect. Incompetent officials are rampant in every sport. Any NHL fan who suffered through the playoffs this year could tell you that.

Thank you, I agree. I think the US is a force to be reckoned with and will be even more so in the future. :thumbsup2

Lol, DH and I just had this same conversation in the car today. We were talking about how boring soccer is to watch and it just seems like a lot of running up and down the field for nothing. :confused3 (We feel the same way about hockey which is basically soccer on ice).

I appreciate that football/soccer is not for everyone, but the great thing about the sport is that it is easy for any kids to get involved. Also is these tough economic times it is relatively inexpensive to start playing. You can buy a ball, shinpads and football boots for less than £40.

I also appreciate that the profesional game can be frustrating at times for spectators but dull 0-0 games do not occur that often.

One last point, i coach a boys U12 team and have 18 players on my books and throughout our club we regularly have more than 100 kids playing football each week. They have fun learn respect self discipline and teamwork and it also keeps them fit.

I dont understand all American sports but i do enjoy watching basketball and hockey. Just give soccer a chance and you may just find yourself chanting on the terraces along with most of the world.

Thanks for the nice words OP:goodvibes Sorry your team lost today:hug: (okay not too sorry--DS is decked out in head to toe German team items today:rotfl:)

Why would a sport only be good if it is American?:confused3 Truly I don't get that. It is the WORLD cup (which is much more about the world than the World series has ever been).
As for your last statement, well, words fail me:sad2:

Funny, we were talking with another American couple today about how much more exciting soccer is than the more popular American sports. It moves sooooo much faster than baseball or American footall. I guess everyone's perceptions are different.

Lol, there's a whole lot of moving, but the moving never seems to amount to much of anything except turning around and running the other direction. DH just said, "it's not even running, it's watching people jog!" :rotfl:

Give me the strategy involved in baseball or football over running around kicking a silly little ball any day. But to each their own! :thumbsup2

I agree!! They played their heart out. GO USA!
