USA Learn to play football

Lol, there's a whole lot of moving, but the moving never seems to amount to much of anything except turning around and running the other direction. DH just said, "it's not even running, it's watching people jog!" :rotfl:

Give me the strategy involved in baseball or football over running around kicking a silly little ball any day. But to each their own! :thumbsup2

I dont know where to begin except to think that you must be joking. I am a HUGE football fan, season tickets, etc . I count the months until August comes along and NFL channel is my favorite! That said, I love soccer.

I challenge you to take part in a game, really play. I can tell you soccer players are NOT jogging and are among the BEST conditioned athletes around. There is plenty of strategy going on and to say that its just running around kicking a silly ball is plain ridiculous.

Lol, DH and I just had this same conversation in the car today. We were talking about how boring soccer is to watch and it just seems like a lot of running up and down the field for nothing. :confused3 (We feel the same way about hockey which is basically soccer on ice).

Now, see, to me, football (American football, not soccer) is the stupidest sport ever created. There seems to be a whole lot of nothing going on, but it takes 3 or 4 hours to do it. To me, it seems like there are a bunch of guys standing around, then there is a burst of activity for 30 or 40 seconds, then they stand around some more and slap each other's backsides.

I am grateful my son plays soccer and hockey, sports I actually enjoy watching. Thankfully he has no interest in football!

I love watching the World Cup, but rarely watch televised soccer otherwise. I grew up in the US, watching team sports before the MLS came about. Because of that I grew up without club allegiances. I can't simply watch a game between two European powers with no rooting interest (unless I bet it). I think that is the biggest problem here, is that we don't have a league that exists on the level of the NFL, MLB, or NBA to keep interest during the other 3 years. I do watch whenever ESPN shows the US national team, but that's usually maybe once a month. I'm also addicted to EA FIFA, which is far and away the best sports video game in the world.

Soccer is to me, more exciting than any sport other than American football when I do have a rooting interest. Unfortunately, club matches just don't do much for me.

The NFL is king here, but the rule changes to protect the offensive players and the extreme amount of stoppages and replays are dulling the game for me. The games are just too drawn out and the amount of commercials during a broadcast is excessive to say the least. Especially in the DVR era where I don't see a single commercial unless I'm watching live sports. One day, the NFL will no longer be king. Don't laugh, baseball, horse racing, and boxing were once the top dogs.

Soccer is only going to get bigger. There is a lot of ignorant chest thumping about how "stupid" soccer is. However, that will certainly be gone a generation from now. The US matches are outdrawing even the NBA Finals that featured the Lakers and Celtics. I'd say people are interested!

Well, besides being completely racist and offensive, you are also incorrect. Incompetent officials are rampant in every sport. Any NHL fan who suffered through the playoffs this year could tell you that.

I hope that after all the horrible missed calls and bad calls that FIFA will actually look at at least having replay for goal calls. It is ridiculous that the technology is there, but they don't want to use it.

And I don't know of any other sport where the refs are pretty much a law unto themselves. Add a few minutes at the end? Sure, add what you want! Go over and yell at a player laying on the ground? Check. Let players stall and wander around if it suits you? Why not?

There should be better oversight of those kinds of things.

Look out world, the Yanks have learned how to play the beautiful game. The Americans have been fantastic in this world cup.
As a passionate Welsh football supporter I have never been able to see my country play in the tournament and I cannot bring myself to support England.
The US have played with pride, passion, and commitment, which should be an inspiration to any American kid who wants to play football.
The team has come into this tournament as underdogs and nobody thought they would get past the group stage. Not only did they qualify, but they did better than England.

USA, you should be proud of your football team, they have taken on the world and performed along side the best. Football is well and truly the 5th sport in the US.

Go Team USA.

Thanks for that!! It's great to see a non-American say something nice about our team.
I'm a die hard football fan, and I have to say I've never been so heartbroken over a sporting event as I was yesterday. I was already crying after Ghana's second goal :sad1:
I'm so proud of our boys though, regardless of what the rest of the world thinks of us!

I couldn't agree more!

The US did well!

Personally I'm not a big soccer fan but I do follow it a bit. The only sport I can't stand is basketball.

That said, go Holland!

Then call me ridiculous....can't stand soccer and it looks like a bunch of people running around in circles to me.. :rotfl:

Thankfully there is something for everyone!! :thumbsup2 I freaking live for college football and Major League baseball!!

Thanks for the post. There is a pretty good soccer culture here it just gets overshadowed by the other sports. I was amazed at how many people had no idea we made it to the quarter finals in 2002 and had it not been for a missed handball call and header off the bar we would have been in the semis against S. Korea, a team we could have beat to get into the final.

The biggest problem we have here is that most of our top athletes don't play soccer, they go into other sports. Had Lebron James, Barry Sanders, and many other stars of "American" sports grown up in a soccer culture there is a good chance that would have been their sport of choice and we would have our own Messi somewhere on the world stage. Many gifted athletes would excel at soccer if that is what they grew up playing instead of basketball/football/baseball.

Association football (aka soccer) pre-dates American football which was itself based in part on both it and rugby so it was American football that stole the name, not the other way around.

I have pretty much stopped watching almost all American sports. Part of the beauty of the game is just playing it, not just scoring. I also love that a goal is so rare and worth more. Once you know the game you start to appreciate the movement and build up of attacks and the tracking back of defenders to cover their lines. Watching a 100-99 basketball game just makes points too cheap for me. I also love the non-stop nature of the game. No commercial breaks, no stopping for replays, no playing for 5 seconds and then huddling up to decide what to do next. No breaks every time you switch sides so you can be shown more commercials. If you get a player sent off you don't get to replace him, you play short. I with other sports would do that. You get a player tossed in baseball, you now play 8 on 9. I also love that, with some rare exception, you have to be physically athletic to play soccer, no Refrigerator Perry or John Kruk (though Ronaldo was getting close in 2006:)).

Take away all the time between plays, the pads, and most of the overweight players and football becomes rugby, which is a blast to watch. Of course I do still love my Ohio State Buckeyes but those are the only football games I watch. I've turned down free Browns tickets every year, I couldn't be bothered.

It is different then what most American's are used to and to each their own of course but we have this unfortunate tendency to try and change everything to make it more American or to dismiss things that aren't popular here.
