US to lift travel ban for foreign air travellers who show proof of vaccination

However not until 2022, and her reasoning is that they don't have the vaccine right now because they are going to do long term care, homeless and hopefully kids.
Re kids, CBC reported yesterday that they are unlikely to be vaccinated in Canada until
2022, as they require a lower dose and Pfizer is preparing new product for them. As we don’t produce here, we won’t be receiving any kids doses until Q1 2022 at the earliest.

Also, Pfizer has not submitted data to Health Canada for the 5-11 yr olds and can't give a timeline as to when they will. Sigh....

Just completed a one week trip to Germany and back to Halifax. Germany was good with our mixed AZ/Ph vaccinations. No test required. The complications were our own Canadian reentry. You need to fill our the arriveCan app (with 72 hours of arrival) which really is quite simple and actually well designed, but getting a covid test becomes more difficult for Monday/Tuesday flights (your test can't be older than 72hours at arrival) We were flying back on Monday, so we needed to find a place open on Saturday. Luck has it that Germany has good clinics that for around $100 will get you a test result in 24 hours. So we get our tests done (2x$100), complete the app and fly home. Upon arrival, even though we were tested, we were "randomly" selected for an additional covid test at Halifax. Ok ... you've flown most of the day, you've done everything you are suppose to, and your standing in a line up that resembles a high school dance coat check. It took an hour to register on a new website "switchhealth". Two iPads to register there and a line ups of confused people, finally I used my iPhone and finished registration. Then you go into a queue for testing. After that, you get your test and you are free to go. Results the next day through their website. Took us 2 hours to clear YHZ in total, which is nuts. I now have a Telehealth appointment with them for a one week follow up. A poster a few pages back suggested that "they don't want us to travel" .... that was exactly how I feel. So, how can we make this better. First of all, we need 7 day a week testing for outgoing travellers and at a reasonable cost. Secondly, I hope that Disney really plans some decent access to Covid testing. Nothing ruins a vacation like stress.

At this point, I don't know what to do. I was planning a quick trip to Universal (and to get a second Pfizer) for late October, but if things would be possible here, if I could get that third dose in Ontario or just don't need it because everyone will be ok with mixed doses, I'd rather do that. But of course time is not on my side. I haven't booked the trip yet but need to soon or it'll be too expensive. And by the time things get announced I will either be in a position to have to cancel my March break trip because I won't be allowed into the US/on the cruise ship, or it'll all be fine... While I get travel is not essential, by March it will have been two years of this. The whole "learn to live with it" thing starts to becomes the way I'm looking at things. Get vaccinated, be protected, and be able to do things like travel again. Heck, wear a mask too. I'd hate to waste the stash of them I've collected after all.

We flew from Toronto Pearson to LA and same thing happened on the way back. We are fully vaccinated, we had our negative molecular test from LA prior to coming back and we were also “randomly” selected to do the on arrival tests at Pearson. Lucky for us, it was Tuesday morning and fairly empty airport, the whole process took 30 min, including having to register with switch health. We were told no need to quarantine until we get our result back, which was emailed 28 hrs later. Makes zero sense.
They also gave us the at home kit for DS12 (who is vaccinated) saying he has to do it with the nurse online on day 7. This is incorrect. The day 7 test is only for minors under 12 and anyone else who is unvaccinated and subject to on arrival and day 7 testing.
We later received emails to ignore the 7th day appointment if exempt but I had it confirmed by calling the government travel/covid line (it is in the email switch health sent us).
I read somewhere last week that only .02 % of the vaccinated travellers are testing positive on arrival so hopefully they will get rid of this in the new year.

I agree with you. We don’t have mixed doses as I was never eligible for AZ (39 this year) but it’s still a process and a half to travel internationally (for any reason) - we did it though in august and we’ll hopefully do it in December again, as you said - it will be 2 years in a few short months. At what point will being vaccinated be enough? Learn to live with it, that’s what we are doing.
Not looking to go to any covid hot spots, but you can absolutely travel safely now. As safely as it is possible to travel, it was never without any risks.

Let me know if you have any luck with rci. I’ve looked into it too and find the accommodations leave something to be desired.
I spent a couple of hours looking at the European RCI options - yuck. Nowhere near any of the spots we might consider visiting. I guess renting out for now is the only option. Our current rented points are for end of April, but we’re leaning towards selling a contract right after.

I’m off to research an ITIN in preparation for selling - too much $ to just let the IRS keep it. Our 200 SSR gives us grandfathered blue card status, but really it’s useless at this point given the lack of perks. Leaning towards keeping our 270 BCV for HR advantage (easier to rent), plus it has a shorter end date which seems an advantage instead of disadvantage at this point.

I didn’t think I’d view our DVC as a weight around our necks this early on (ssr bought in 2016, bcv in 2018) but here we are. I keep imagining the relief I’ll feel to be rid of it ☹️

Sorry to hear all this. Not surprised about rci. We’ve been members since 2008. Not selling yet. I love my dvc so much, and although I’ve thought of selling these past months, I believe this too shall pass. I’ll get back there. In the meantime, I’m grateful for the strong rental market. I can see your point of view though. We have 860 points, so heavily invested. I have big retirement plans that involve Disney, so not anxious to sell.

We’re almost finished paying off the HELOC we took out for the bcv contract (2% rate so we went that route rather than use our invested / TFS money) - last payment is this upcoming Feb.

All I see is the outlay of thousands for MF and the inability to use it. Maybe if I only had a few years left in education & not 11 I would think differently, but we don’t know how long we will essentially be barred from travel during school breaks. We just got an email reiterating that we must quarantine if we travel during the school year, like huh???

I just keep thinking that the loss of flexibility & freedom to cancel isn’t made up by the discount. We were already looking at USO vacations anyway as the kids get older. It’s sad, but we can get out and still recoup a big chunk of our outlay which is fantastic 👍🏻

Sounds like you’ve thought it through. The quarantine after school breaks is really tough.

Yes. It’s not even for students, just staff 🙄
Talk to your union...your board is wrong and using bully tactics. As per our government guidelines, if you are double Vaxxed and are not asked to quarantine when you return, you can legally say you never left the country for any covid related questioning.

In fact, for our daily screening the one section recently changed to something like "have you been out of the country AND asked to quarantine upon return".

Now, if you are forced to quarantine, you could be screwed. But if you did, I wonder if you actually would ever need to tell your board that you left the country; could it not be assumed you contracted it near home?

They simply resent the same email from last Sept. The union can’t even get us permission to wear our own paid oop superior ppe 🤷🏼‍♀️
