I have not been to US in about 20 yrs. My family has never been. So this is my question. We are not fans of roller coaster type of rides (Not fans of TOT or RR). Though they like runaway train and splash mountain. Is there anything for us to do at US/IOA? Any suggestion on what rides they should do? Would one park be better than the other? One of my children is a HP fan. Thanks for any suggestions.

go to www.universalorlando.com and see what is in both parks.

you will get ride descriptions and information to guide you.

also check out rides on youtube.

a lot has changed in 20 years there.

THere are actually way more theme rides than thrill rides, there are only a handful of coasters, everything else is a theme ride more or less. If you think Pirates of the Caribbean or Haunted Mansion, most rides are similar in nature. You could actually count the thrill rides on one hand,, its about I'm guessing 15% thrill rides at most, everything else is themed rides

My kids aren't really into thrill rides but they love Universal, even more than Disney. I would highly recommend visiting both parks and if you stay onsite even for just one night you get unlimited express passes for both your check-in and check-out dates.

I kind of disagree with that in regards to IOA. There are pretty much equal part thrill rides and theme rides. Thrills include: Hulk, Doom, Ripsaw, River Adventure, Spider-Man, Forbidden Journey, Dragon Challenge. Then you have Cat in the Hat, Seuss Trolley, Pteradon Flyers (height permitting), Storm Force, Hippogriff, Caro-Seuss-El and One Fish, and Popeye's.

USF has a bigger variety of theme rides, and only a few thrills- RRR, Mummy and Transformers.

My children have never been to US/IOA, but have been to Disney every year since they were born. I was thinking of staying one night just to see if we would enjoy it for further vacations. This trip we are thinking about skipping Disney all together. Trying other adventures.

Thanks for the list I will use this as a guide.

Don't rule out Spider-Man or Forbidden Journey! I am a roller coaster wimp and It took a lot of courage to try them, but now I rate them at the top of my all time favorites! Lots of action but no big drops. Like others have said, check out you tube to get a feel for what they're like. Enjoy!

Agreed! My kids, who don't like roller coasters, love both Spider-Man and Forbidden Journey. The Seuss area is also fun and very mild. My kids also like, on the Studios side, the Simpsons, ET & Men in Black.

I don't consider Spiderman and Jurassic Park "thrill rides" at all. I think of them as theme rides. Jurassic Park is a slow boat ride, save the final 80 foot drop. Spiderman is a slow moving car. I personally would not call those "thrill" rides. I think of thrill rides as either coasters or tall drop rides, or fair spinning type rides

They're both listed as thrill rides on Universal's website :confused3

Jurassic Park's drop is huge. Sure, the rest of the ride is tame but that element definitely makes it a thrill ride.

I guess everyone has a different definition. But I think when most people say they don't like thrill rides, they are talking about roller coasters, at least that is the impression I've always gotten

Universal is a mixed bag. Any HP fan should see WWOHP, of course. The ride is great, great, great. Popeye & Bluto is an obvious river raft ride, and Dudley is a log flume ride, typical of other parks but both excellent. You WILL get drenched. Jurassic Park is no big deal and can be missed. Theme is weak and there is a big drop that may soak you. This is not a particularly popular attraction. Poseidon's Fury is a high quality walk-throuhg attraction, unique. There is a good stunt show. And Spiderman is not a thrill ride, really, with no big drop or roller coaster movement. Anyone who can hadne a runaway train ride like in Disney should be prefectly ok on spidey. It is one of the best theme park rides in the world. The Cat in the Hat ride is excellent, as good as a kids dark ride can get. The Seuss trolley is well-themed and a lot of fun.

Over at Universal Studios there are a couple of good 4-D movies with Terminator providing some live action as well. Men in Black is a shooting ride, well done, the Horror Make up Show is very funny, and there is even a parlor magic show at the magic shop. Without the rollercoasters (or roller coaster simulators), I'd say Universal is a very fine one-day place. The parks are beautifully themed. In fact, this may be the best way to see the parks without getting overloaded.

I would absolutely not say that Jurassic Park is nothing special. We do it several times a day when we go. We love it and it cannot be missed!

Several times a day? Wow, I'm glad you like it so much. I've been to Universal twice, and nobody seems to go - wait time were very short if not walk on.

Wait times in the morning and evening are easily walk on. When the heat gets bad in the summer around 2-5pm the line can be long. Also, the ride has a high capacity. Just saying that I think a lot of people love this ride. I don't feel as if I am in the minority in thinking it is not something to be skipped.

Edit: I am in no way saying it is as popular as it once was. Just definitely worth it!

I hope we like Jurassic park.Haven't gotten to do Jurassic yet( it was closed the last 2 visits) but I am looking forward to it next month..Poseidens fury we all thought was awful and will skip it this time..It is a shame since the building is so beautiful

We usually go in August and Jurassic Park can get backed up at times. I rarely see it over 20 minutes though. I also don't consider it a thrill ride but a dark ride with a thrilling element. The drop is pretty high but easy to see from the outside if that's a concern.

Spiderman is easy to deal with if it gets scary. It's really just a slow moving rocking car and closing your eyes makes it feel like only that. The bilge rat barges aren't really scary to me, just wet!

JPRA can get backed up to the tune of a 60 minute wait or longer depending on the season and time. You are correct in saying it gets bad in the summer during peak time in the park.
