Hey everyone!

My wife and made a trip to the World back in April. While I was enjoying Main Street USA, yet again, I noticed that the US Flags on top of the buildings in downtown were not the 50 state current US Flags. I was wondering what year the flags were supposed to depict in American History. After doing some research the only thing I have found is one site acknowledging that they are not current, or "official" American Flags, but no mention of what exact year they depict.

What makes this more interesting to me is that I am from Oklahoma. Oklahoma was the 46th State admitted into the Union, and that was in 1907. If Main Street USA is supposed to be based upon Merciline, Missouri in 1910, I know that if its 1910, then its the 46 star flag, b/c Arizona was not admitted until 1912.

I don't know, just curious if anyone knew for certain what American Flag is depicted in the flags that fly over the buildings on Main Street USA.

BTW, I do know that the Flag in Town Square is a current 50 star US Flag, and therefore, there is a legal obligation to the Flag Retreat, only proper that US Flags are lit or taken down at dusk, but the Flags on Main Street are not "official" flags therefore they can stay up.

Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong thread category.

Everyone have a Magical Day!

They are non-50 star flags so that they do not fall under the flag code. Therefore, there is no need to light them or take them down each day like the central flag.

Yeah, that's what I read and it makes sense.

Just curious if anyone knew exactly how many stars are on those flags?

I'm sure it also has to do with the time period as well. Main Street is supposed to represent a turn of the century town.

There are some detailed photos on google images. I don't know anything about the photos' authenticity, but one of the most clear pictures that occurred near the top of the results had this many stars:

FWIW this flag would I believe be the correct flag to fly on July 4, 1876.

On our keys to the kingdom tour, the only real flag is on the flag pole. The rest are inaccurates because of the reason mentioned above, lowering/taking down flags, plus they are on metal poles designed to take lightning bolts if necessary, and hence potentially burned.

They didn't say that the inaccurate flags had any other significance in terms of historical times or dates.

I would also suspect that the flags in Frontierland represent a different era. Will have to check that out the next time I'm in the MK.

While the "Flag Code" gives guidelines for how US flags should be handled (which I agree with), the Flag Code law is not enforced. Contrary to popular belief, you can't be fined or arrested if you leave a flag up at night (lit or unlit), or in the rain/snow/sleet/other precipitation. It is certainly disrespectful of the flag, but not punishable. See below.

From WikiPedia:

"The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the national flag of the United States of America. It is Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). This is a U.S. federal law, but the penalty described in in Federal Law 18 USC Section 700 –[1] for failure to comply with it is not enforced and the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that punitive enforcement would conflict with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech.[2]"
