US Airways - Upgrading to first class??

Does anyone know how to use dividend miles to upgrade to first class on US Air?
I've tried to read the online information, but still can't comprehend it.
Can I purchase my coach tickets now and get a guaranteed upgrade?
Or do I have to wait till a few days before the flight to see if I am lucky to snag a first class seat?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I believe you can only upgrade with miles if you are flying on a unrestricted fare or if you have a preferred level dividend miles status.

Or you can use an upgrade reward for 10,000 miles on a unrestricted fare or 20,000 on a restricted fare:

They have cut down on the number of first class seats on their planes. 757's used to have 24 first class seats, now only 8.

You would probably have to get in line for any upgrades behind the preferred US flyers. Chairman's Preferred can request an upgrade when making a reservation. Other levels have different dates that they clear for an upgrade.

Depending on the city you are flying from you may have a hard time upgrading.
