US Air question

Purchased a one way for my 4 yo dd.
I want to go earlier now, so after reading the fine print it seems that:
*On the day of travel, if we just don't use the ticket, but call and cancel, they will give us a "credit" for the amount of the ticket to be used within 12 months of the issue date??

Has anyone done this?

This is true, but they will also charge a $150 change fee to rebook on another flight. The credit will only be good for 1 year.
