So we leave this Saturday for Disney World and my daughter has just been diagnosed with strep. I know she will be fine by the time we leave but I'm worried about my son now. If he develops any symptoms Disney said he would have to go to Urgent Care outside of Disney or a doctor can come to the resort. But, I'm pretty sure a doctor only comes if its a real emergency. So my question is, has anyone had to bring their child or themselves to urgent care while at Disney? If so, did you wait a really long time or did they take you right away? I know I'm making assumptions but I just want to be prepared. TIA!!!

Oh no!!! :(. I'm sure your daughter will be better by then - and crossing my fingers for you that your son stays healthy! I don't know if this would be possible at all but could you talk to your daughter's doctor and tell them you're leaving for disney and are concerned about your son? I wonder if they could have a prescription on standby (per say) so if your son does get sick you could call and see if they'd call it in for you? That's what I would try - but like i said, no idea if they'd do that or not.

Our little guy (around 10 months old at the time) got so so so super sick on day 2 of our Disney trip 2 years ago :(. It was awful. I ended up having to take him to an Urgent Care and it sucked. Totally threw us out of the Disney bubble and into Orlando regular life (lol) and it was no good. I mean, the urgent care was fine. We probably waited an hour and then probably half an hour after we were taken back we got out of there. But it was not how I wanted to spend a Disney day. I've read some places that there's an urgent care on or basically on Disney property - is that right? We didn't go there but I can't remember why. If maybe we didn't know about it or it was closed or something? Not sure now that I think about it. We ended up driving probably 15 minutes out to find one. But we were frantic parents of a 10 month old with a crazy high fever for hours that wouldn't go down with meds, so we weren't thinking straight :).

The good thing is there is only about a 25 to 50% chance he will get it unless they have been eating or drinking after each other. Call your pediatrician. Your doctor should be able to go ahead and give you a prescription now, to take with you in case he comes down with it. Give it to him at the first sign he is coming down with it, and hopefully it will knock it out very quickly. DD had it a few months ago--she was absolutely miserable on a Thursday afternoon- got her first dose of antibiotics at 5:00 p.m., and was fine by 2:00 p.m. the next day and performing on stage that night. Hopefully he won't get it, or if he does, you can knock it out really fast so he isn't down for long!

i just went to the urgent care called centra care a couple minutes from DTD on april 13th.

they were great.

they provide a free shuttle van from where ever you are on disney property (i was at DTD but once i was there i heard them dispatching to HS and AOA).
and they also provide the free shuttle van back to your resort (actually i found out after i was almost back to my resort that they could have taken me back to DTD if i wanted to).

i was there because i tripped and cut my chin and needed stitches but while there i could hear why other people were there sitting in the curtained off area.
one child cut themselves, another child had tons of wax in their ears, another child was diagnosed with the flu, a man twisted his ankle, and older woman had a rash....

i waiting in the waiting room for about 45 minutes before being taken back to the curtained area.

i waited about 20 minutes for the doctor.

the doctor stitched me up.

then a nurse gave me a tetanus shot and i had to wait 20 minutes before i could be discharged to make sure i did not have a reaction.

they seemed to have quite a bit of medication on hand although i did hear that the child that had the flu was going to need tamiflu and the father was going to walgreens which was apparently walkable to get the prescription filled.

they gave me an antibiotic right there.

i paid the bill which because my insurance is amazing it was only $50+$20 fort he mdication.

they called for a shuttle van to pick me up and within 5 minutes it were there.

i was in and out and back at my resort in 3hrs flat.

i think thats pretty efficient. much more so then an ER visit at least.

i would definitely trust that central care to take good care of your child if he does get strep.

here is a piece of info i got right off the disneyw orld website:
Offsite Urgent Care
Florida Hospital Centra Care Walk-In Urgent Care Centers are open 8:00 AM to midnight, Monday through Friday, and 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday.

Complimentary transportation is available and many insurance plans are accepted. Call (407) 934-2273 for more info.

Thank you! I took your advice and called the doctor. They can't write a prescription but they will see him first appointment tomorrow and the over night strep test results will be back by early evening. So if he has it I will have the prescription. They also said even if he is showing no symptoms and the virus is in his body, it will show up on the test. I feel so much better now. Thank you both for the well wishes. I'm sure my son will be fine and we will have a good time.

Sorry Stacymarie for your ordeal. Definitely not easy and feel bad you went through that. As for the urgent care on Disney property, the cast member on the phone said there isn't one but a doctor can come to the premises. Like I said, probably depends on the situation and insurance.

FYI for others, be very careful about using the Urgent Care outside DTD. My DD went for a strep test and they wanted $400 down and told her to expect thousands of dollars in charges. This was not DD error, I was on the phone while she was there. I told her to walk out the door, they are nuts. I called other urgent cares that were not near the parks and they laughed at the thought the urgent care would demand that money.

I found the Walgreens a couple blocks north on 535 would see her in the clinic. She was seen immediately, given medication and instructions and the total bill to me was $60. Since then she ended up at the Florida Celebration Hospital ER and we are still battling that bill which was obscene for the minimal services she received. They are refusing to itemize and are clearly ripping us off. Beware of any "services" close to tourist destinations.

We were aiming for the Walgreens clinic when we went - but they don't see children under maybe 15 or 18 months?

well i only paid $70 total for a doctor to see me, stitches, a tetanus shot, and antibiotics so i think it really depends on the insurance you have (or don't have) so i wouldn't go blaming the urgent care because they are probably charging the same as most.

We were using the same insurance at the Urgent Care as we were at Walgreens. I pay an extremely high amount of money to have very good insurance particularly since I have a DS who is disabled. I am very aware of our insurance and how it works. The urgent care was most definitely trying to take advantage and that has been verified by the current issue I have with their supervising hospital.

My point is to ALWAYS be sure what the facility is planning to charge you for, what your up front costs are and get itemized and detailed bills before leaving for future reference. For something like a strep test etc, urgent care is not the only option and you likely can save much time and money by knowing all your options. In a tourist location, you need to stay informed so you aren't surprised later.

they told me my co-pay prior to being called back so i knew exactly what i was going to pay.
i'm also disabled and i'm under my dad's insurance.
the point i'm trying to make is that it depends on your insurance coverage.
perhaps your insurance is not accepted there.
or perhaps your insurance has a high deductible.
i have blue cross blue shield of western new york and our coverage is amazing.
$5 for primary doctor visits, $10 for specialists, $5 for medications, $10 for inpatient or outpatient surgeries (which i've had a number of due to my disability), $150 for an ambulance ride, $150 for an ER visit if you are not admitted, $10 for an ER visit if you are admitted...
and at home it would have been $5 for an urgent care visit but i think $50 for services + $20 for medication was not a bad price considering i was out of network.
