All of my DV was recorded on a Sony that has a firewire connection for uploading to our old computer. Is there any hardware out there for uploading this video to my laptop, which doesn't have a firewire connection?

I had that prob too, with a camcorder I have.
This is what I did, I went to Newegg.com and found a hard drive enclosure that had both a firewire connection on it and a usb connection. I then also bought hard drive to put in the enclosure.

I plugged the drive into the computer and then the camcorder into the external hard drive. I then downloaded from the the camcorder directly onto external hard drive.

I bought this card from Newegg several years ago to solve the same problem you have:

Are you sure you don't have firewire on your laptop? Laptop firewire ports are often the little ports like what's on your camcorder and not like the larger firewire ports on your PC. If that's the case for you, all it takes is a $3 adapter for the end of your cable.
